We paid tribute to Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte in Uqweqwe, KwaZulu-Natal where he died in 1879.

The ceremony was an opportunity to engage with traditional authorities and the community on reconciliation & heritage as a way to connect South African and French youth.

On Thursday evening, Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube had a constructive exchange with representatives of French companies in South Africa and the French Embassy.

The discussion emphasized:

(1) The critical importance of equal access to early-childhood quality education;
(2) The need to support the development of technical skills and guide students towards these rewarding careers;
(3) The efforts to align curriculums with the evolving needs of the industry.

In the presence of 🇫🇷 President @EmmanuelMacron and 🇿🇦 Deputy President @PMashatile, Transnet and the French Development Agency (AFD) signed an MoU to accelerate the energy transition of Transnet, South Africa’s public logistics company.

This prospective AFD loan to Transnet forms part of France’s contribution to JETP (just energy transition partnership), which AFD has been implementing since 2021, and fulfils France’s €1 billion (R20 billion) commitment announced at COP26 in support of South Africa’s just energy transition.

⚡️A first €300M (R6 billion) loan signed in 2022 encouraged the development of renewables and focused on mobilizing private capital to support ESKOM and put an end to load-shedding.

🌐 A second loan of €400M (R8 billion) signed in 2024 to address the social dimensions of the transition and strengthen local governance, notably at the municipal level. The French support will also help workers access new economic opportunities generated by the energy sector transformation.

🚅 The last €300M (R6 billion) loan is expected to be signed early 2026. It will fund the modernisation of the rail network, cut transport emissions, and increase Transnet’s use of renewable electricity.

France’s ambition is clear: accelerating South Africa’s decarbonisation while ensuring a socially inclusive transition.
