In 1986, The American Medical Association published an article titled "The Physical Death of Jesus Christ". It details the entire process of Jesus' trial to His death on the cross.
In Luke 22, before Jesus is arrested, it is written that He was in great distress & sweating blood. Although rare, it is recognized as Hematidrosis, caused by high amounts of stress.
At the time, the crucifixion was considered the worst death for the worst of criminals. But this is not all Jesus faced. He endured whipping so severe that it tore the flesh from His body. He was beaten so horrific that His face was torn & His beard ripped.
A crown of thorns, 2-3 inches long cut deeply into His scalp. The leather whip used to flog Him had tiny iron balls & sharp bones. The balls caused internal injuries while the sharp bones ripped open His flesh. His skeletal muscles, veins, & bowels we're exposed, causing major blood loss. Most men do not survive this kind of torture. After Jesus was severely flogged, He was forced to carry His own cross while people mocked & spat on Him.
Crucifixion was a process meant to instill excruciating pain, creating a slow & agonizing death. Nails as long as 8 inches were driven into Jesus' wrists & feet. The Roman soldiers knew the tendon in the wrists would tear & break, forcing Jesus to use His back muscles to support Himself to breathe. Imagine the struggle, the pain, the courage..Jesus endured this reality for 3 hours!
The Gospel of John writes that after Jesus' death, a Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear & blood & water came out. Scientists explain that from hypovolemic shock, the rapid heartrate causes fluid to gather in the sack around the lungs & heart. The gathering of fluid in the membrane around the heart is called Pericardial effusion & the lungs, Pleural effusion.
To the world, Christianity is as foolish as it can get. They believe it's for the weak. But when you are confronted by the reality of the cross, it's clearly not a pretty sight. It is brutal & horrific.
This is the weight Jesus carried. The weight of the sins of the world, all so that we can live. God's wrath is fully satisfied in Jesus. This is what it took. Repent & believe! Jesus is “God among us” in the flesh. Jesus is our Savior. Jesus loves you so much, He went through this spiritual and physical punishment for your sins and mine.
Jesus is LORD, Almighty God, Everlasting Father.
The things you worship/idolize on earth will soon wash away WITH the earth. Social media, prosperity, recognition, etc. How miserable would eternity be if you had to keep up with all of those things? Focus your praise and honor to the only One that will last eternally.
“They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator- who is forever praised. Amen.” Ro 1:24
I’m thankful today that God’s Word doesn’t hide the fact that Jesus was an emotional being. It does not disguise the fact that He wept or felt betrayal. He wasn’t a man who was unaffected by the hurt of the world. The God of creation knows your emotions because He felt them too.
Maybe I’m just slow and late to the party but the verse in the song “Battle Belongs” when it says “when all I see is the cross, God you see the empty tomb” it just resonated with me that He does see the end result & the full picture when all we see is the current circumstance
They were fed for 10 days & then judged against those who ate the royal food. To no surprise, they out performed the others. Are we taking the first option the world gives us (filling the need instantly) or are we relying upon Jesus to meet our every need and to satisfy us?
In Daniel 1, it says that Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah (who were later given new names) had the clear choice to eat the royal food and drink wine which was probably very filling and tasty. Instead, they asked to be fed vegetables and water to drink and rely upon the Lord.
Here’s my random thought for the day:
There hasn’t been one person who could unite this country, let alone have the task of uniting the world yo accomplish one goal. But isn’t it crazy that with one voice, with THE voice of God, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess.
It takes one special student to walk to the opposite side of campus in freezing weather with a windchill that feels like razor blades to the skin just to sit in your class that quite frankly has nothing to do with your future career🙂
To reveal the kingdom coming and to reconcile the lost, to redeem the whole creation, You did not despise the cross. For even in Your suffering, You saw to the other side. Knowing this was our salvation, Jesus for our sake You died
I find it disrespectful that the weather is delightful this week which happens to be finals week. How am I supposed to study when all I want to do is sit outside and do nothing?
