Was Akbar really as great as our school textbooks taught us?
Meena Bazaar was an event organized during the Nauroz festival, reportedly held within the Agra Fort complex. Beautiful women were brought to the fair for the entertainment of Mughal men and nobles.
Once, Akbar allegedly encountered a woman named Kiran Devi and admired her beauty. Despite knowing that she was the daughter of his ally Shakti Singh, he pursued her.
Akbar followed Kiran and blocked her path when she was alone. He allegedly offered to spend a night with her. Kiran identified herself as the wife of Prithviraj Rathore, one of Akbar’s prominent courtiers.
Yet Akbar supposedly failed to control his lust and approached her. In the next moment, she lunged at him, drew a dagger, and pressed her foot against his chest, declaring:
“I am a princess of Mewar. I will kill my enemy or die, but I will never surrender. We are people of Mewar who would rather leap into the flames of Jauhar than suffer the humiliation of surrender.”
Akbar had not expected this resistance and immediately begged for forgiveness. Kiran Devi reportedly demanded that the Nauroz fair never be held again. Akbar allegedly agreed, and she spared his life.
Akbar left in silence and shame.
A man who does not respect women can never truly be called great.
