#VoltaCatalunya104

Thread.
Interesting statistic:
Since 1957, 72% of Tour de France victories have been achieved by riders implicated in doping scandals. 💊
These riders and their infractions are listed below. 👇
Pogačar did 6.98 ᵉW/Kg for 39:50 min. Sea normalised power for this historic effort is 7.27 ᵉW/Kg. Jonas Vingegaard, despite losing 68 seconds did the second-greatest climbing performance of all time.https://t.co/ApKubAABHa
#Vesuvius day in the #GirodItalia! Stage 10 will start in famous Pompeii, the city destroyed in 79AD during the devastating explosion of this mythical volcano. Pliny the Younger wrote an eye witness report of the eruption, which marks the onset of modern volcanology and lends its name to such volcanic explosions: plinean eruptions.
Vesuvius is a mountain of superlatives. It is currently 1230 m high. But because this mountain has a history of blowing its top off, you can imagine it has been much higher. In fact, Vesuvio is only a small cone that formed in the caldera of the actual volcano, Mte Somma. The magma chamber below Mte Somma collapsed, making a vertical wall around a 'caldera' valley, and Mt. Vesuvius is only the cone that grew in the center of the caldera. Like the Phoenix rising from its own ashes.
Now, if you follow us, you'll have seen that when we talk about the formation of mountain belts, like the Alps or Apennines, we're talking about millions or tens of millions of years to reach elevations of a km or more. But Mte Somma, and younger brother Mt Vesuvius, are both built on the 'Campanian ash' that formed when the Campi Flegrei to the west formed its massive caldera, 39000 years ago. That means that the entire volcano, formed in less that that time, and probably only in the last 20.000 years. That's superfast!
And it's been violent, too. Enormous explosions like in 79 AD have occurred at least 4 times in the last thousands of years. And Pompeii and Herculaneum, the main victims of the 79 AD eruption, are clear witnesses of such devastation. We're quite used to seeing ruins if we visit ancient Roman infrastructure, because of 2000 years of wind and rain, earthquakes, or wars and human destruction. So seeing the ruins of Pompeii looks 'normal'. Until you realize that on the morning of August 24, 79 AD, Pompeii was a thriving city, and that same evening it was in ruins and covered in ash, taking 30.000 lives. All of that devastation occurred in a day, and was then fossilized. See an impressive animation here: https://t.co/3cSHRGEKvJ.
There were later eruptions, and also deadly ones. The 1641 eruption lowered the top of the volcano by 400 m, and cost 4000 people their lives. The last eruption occurred in 1944. And there will be a next.
The peloton will leave Pompeii today, but while you see them ride around Monte Somma and Vesuvius, perhaps give this majestic mountain and the impact it made a second thought.

Are we seriously going to start one of the biggest cycling conspiracies ever that the Opi-Omi girl is the same person that has thrown a bad to MvdP's bike?😭
