Primary factors:

1. Caraxes is a lot younger.
2. His body is built differently.
3. Although gravely injured (loses an entire wing and has his belly torn open), this results in a slower death, mainly because of his guts coming out, etc.

Vhagar's throat was literally "sliced open"—in this case, dragon-bite-sized sliced open—resulting in rapid blood loss. That's aside from the fact that Caraxes probably squeezes the life out of Vhagar's upper body, making it even harder for poor old Vhagar to breathe.

So yeah.

@Lairdphoenix27 Believe it or not these dragons are not stupid. They can sense/know when a Targaryen of valerian blood is one of their own. Meaning part of the club house. Vermithor made dragonstone home for many many years. His previous rider was Rhaenyras great grand daddy. He knew lol

@nobodyfwD There two different scenarios. Daemon was literally up in his crib ALONE in the dark and was the first to make contact after so many years. It was a lot more riskier for Daemon. Rhaenyra on the other hand had vermithor come to her and must've been soften by Daemon already.
