@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish Halving something is dividing it into 2 pieces, always. When you halve a number, the number you start with determines the value of one half (x/2)… in this case it’s a sandwich, so sandwich/2 ?
@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish Oh brother. You’re not adding 0.5, you’re putting a numerator over 2 and getting a value…. Sure 3 halves is 0.5 0.5 0.5 if you count with your fingers. But it’s really 3/2 and that has a value (1.5). Your argument is that 500/2 is not 250, it’s 500 halves lol
@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish Either assume “by one half”, which is standard convention in formal math problems, (which this is not). Or assume they mean “by half” of the only other number available (500).
@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish No, I interpreted it the same as you. As I have said twice before. I got 1050 as well. BUT because they purposefully worded it as you just described, no matter which way you choose to do it you need to make an assumption…
@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish Half is dividing into 2 halves. It’s literally in the name “one half”… one divided by 2… which is why to definitively say this meme is 500 / 0.5, it would need to say “one half” not half. Thanks for finally understanding
@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish This is wild logic. “reduce”.. a subtraction operation, is meant to multiply(!) by 0.5. And to find half of something you don’t divide by 2, you multiply by a fraction? Incredible. Anyway, glad to have you on the “obviously it’s ambiguous” team
@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish lol… because when I say reduce 500 by half, half = 250, not 0.5. You seem to disagree. You’re not wrong to say it’s 1050, it’s just that 52 is not wrong either… and frankly its weird you have such a problem with that
@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish I interpret it to mean 1050 as well. But half is not a number… Reduce 500 by half… the answer is not 499.5 right? “By half” is the same, just like the meme but it means something else. Theres 49,000 comments on this post. Claiming it’s not ambiguous is silly.
@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish You’re both right because the 2 possible answers are 52 and 1050… both wrong because the only way to be wrong is to claim 1 of those 2 options is definitely correct…. Evidence of this is the fact it’s 6th grade math and there are countless comments of adults arguing about it
@DougFunnyLOLHAH@YasserAKhan@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish You guys are both right and both wrong. That’s the whole point of the post. It’s not a math problem… because it’s 6th grade math, and hopefully adults don’t need 100s of comments to get that right. it’s a word problem… purposefully ambiguous to generate comments
@igotdegrees@RoachCannon1@sqsehrish The answer they want is either 1050 or 52… the point is it’s worded so that you can interpret it as either… and pointing that out is the only thing I’ve done, which you disagreed
