“I make the argument, and I believe it wholeheartedly. I’m not just being a homer. Pound for pound, Philadelphia is the best golfing city in the country.”
When the Gil Hanse-Jim Wagner reno at the public Cobbs Creek is complete, there may be no argument: https://t.co/R2vVHl94w0
Cobbs Creek is Philadelphia's oldest public course. It was a cornerstone of the city’s municipal golf scene for much of the 20th century before falling into disrepair. Now, with funding from the Cobbs Creek Foundation and support from Tiger Woods and the TGR Foundation, the site is undergoing a sweeping transformation.
The project has already seen a TGR Design short course and TGR Learning Lab completed, while a new 18-hole layout from Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner is under construction and set to open in fall 2027.
With significant investment, great design talent, and a remarkable piece of land, Cobbs Creek has the potential to become a world-class golf facility.

A island green dream taking shape in West Philadelphia…
I got a chance to walk the nascent golf course at Cobbs Creek this evening - I’ve been excited about what Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner have been doing with this historic property since this project was announced, but I’m absolutely giddy about it now.
Cobbs Creek is such an important part of Philadelphia golf. I went to college just up the street, and would play here before and after (and often during) class on pretty spring and crisp fall days. This was before the golf architecture nerd bug had fully bitten, and I never really understood or appreciated the historic bones of the ground under my feet.
To see this property now brought back to life gives me goosebumps. And to see this land opened up, its natural and dramatic movement revealed, and the way the golf course will eventually wind its way around the creek and these hills is thrilling in a way I didn’t think it could be.
I don’t know what number hole this is going to be in the photo below, but I know it’s going to be amazing.
The Cobbs Creek Foundation is grateful for the ongoing recognition of the incredible progress we have made and remain committed to as we continue this transformational project. We look forward to achieving even more as we work to fulfill our vision.
"Today, this ground is in Philadelphia. But if a successful model is created at Cobbs Creek, combining golf and STEM education under a non-profit, self-supporting model, other cities might have to sit up and take notice. Chicago. Detroit. St. Louis. Los Angeles. Houston. Maybe they’ll see the municipal course that time has forgotten and see something different. Maybe times can change."

Seeding bent greens in Aug/Sept, expect 20 growing weeks to produce a playing surfaces. Expect two years for a new seeding to reach it's genetic potential. It is a big mistake to open with too much play too soon - first with a soft opening, limited play, members only. Trust me.
We are eagerly counting down the days until the opening of the TGR Learning Lab on the Cobbs Creek Campus, set to open its doors in less than a year! The foundation and structure of this expansive 30,000-square-foot facility is being built now. The TGR Learning Lab will be the central hub for local youth seeking enriching after-school and year-round STEAM education programs—all free of charge. The Cobbs Creek Foundation is thrilled to have @TGRFound as our esteemed educational partner, propelling us forward as #ChampionsForYouth and game-changers in the field of education. #Changingthegame

It is early in 1919 and Cobb’s Creek golf course has been open coming up on three years and getting plenty of ink. Some articles maybe just to get whatever clicks were before the web!
Here is a March 27, 1919, article from the Evening Public Ledger.
