With a heavy heart after attending her Tata’s funeral earlier in the day, Sunnyside senior captain Tatyana Vega had one of her best performances in her high school career - perhaps the best. Sunnyside defeated Salpointe 2-1 behind her performance in the circle - only five hits and one run allowed in seven innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Sunnyside coach Ozzie Carbajal talks about the importance of beating Salpointe 2-1 to improve to 7-2 overall. The Blue Devils won the emotion-filled game rallying around senior starting pitcher Tatyana Vega, who pitched a complete-game victory on the same day she attended her grandfather’s funeral. The game was originally scheduled yesterday but a leak from a pipe under Sunnyside’s field caused a postponement to today at Salpointe. Carbajal said Vega still wanted to pitch. She was dominant.
Sunnyside first baseman Soleil Ponce had two of the three hits Salpointe ace Macee Jackson allowed in the Blue Devils’ 2-1 win over Salpointe. Ponce, who scored a run, is one of Sunnyside’s senior captains along with pitcher Tatyana Vega, who went to the circle on the same day she attended her grandfather’s funeral. Ponce discusses the team supporting Vega through the emotional day.

They use a Boys soccer pic of Sunnyside, but don’t mention the Boys soccer run in the open division.
Also no mention of Sunnyside Girls Hoops. Who made it to the “Final Four” in 6A.
Do better @TucsonStar
No. 1 Pinnacle beats visiting No. 9 Sunnyside 2-1 in OT in the Open Division quarterfinals.
The Blue Devils end their season 21-4 after taking the state's top-rated team to the limit.
Goal in OT for Pinnacle controversial because it appeared Miggy Lugo had the ball in his hands with the save when a Pinnacle player bumped into him to jar the ball loose and then scored.
At any rate, another good season for Casey O'Brien and the Blue Devils to get this far in the Open Division and almost upset Pinnacle on the road.
The AIA rule for OT in soccer in the postseason:
Two 10-minute halves.
If the game is tied after the two periods, it will come down to penalty kicks.
The game between Sunnyside and Pinnacle is tied at 1, 5 minutes into the first half of OT.
Sunnyside's Open Division quarterfinal match at top-seeded Pinnacle is going to OT tied at 1 after the Blue Devils scored a goal with 5 minutes to spare in regulation.
Not at the game because of time constraints but following the stream -- No. 9 Sunnyside and No. 1 Pinnacle are scoreless at the 10-minute mark in the Open Division quarterfinal boys soccer match.
@ArizonaAIA Please help us understand. Blue Devils beat Rincon/University. Rangers stay in same spot. Blue Devils drop a few spots. How?!?
Is that a 0-13 team ranked above other teams with victories?
Please help it make sense.
You beat the teams you play. Or schedule big?!
