I worked in widening participation for years and what struck me most was the extent to which History A Level students from low performing comprehensives with C/D expected grades were often more insightful articulate seminar participants than my undergraduates who all got AAA

@FlorenceHRScott The idea a person's future course is set at 16 and you can never (and certainly should never try to) improve your fate or broaden your horizons after that is a poisonous one that's grown increasingly central to the way we talk about education in this country.

@FlorenceHRScott Anecdote too, but I got a D in history at GCSE, managed to scrape a B at A-Level, then headed to University and ended up with a First and an MA. And this was 10 years ago, so I'm not sure how the Telegraph accounts for that. Couldn't be that all learners are different, of course.
