Alcohol is linked to ~178,000 deaths per year in the U.S. and is a leading preventable cause of death. Cannabis has real risks (impaired driving, youth exposure, high-THC harms), but a far lower documented mortality burden.

That doesn’t mean one is “good” and the other is “bad.” It means regulation should match measured harm:

• Alcohol → stronger policies where deaths/injuries are highest (pricing, availability, education)
• Cannabis → targeted safeguards (potency, labeling, youth protection, driving enforcement)
Same principle for both:
✔ Evidence-based
✔ Transparent
✔ Focused on actual risk—not assumptions
