Cal’s entire story is honestly one of the saddest in the series, despite the fact that he’s done a lot of terrible things. You don’t have to excuse his actions to understand why he’s such a broken person.
What makes his story tragic is that he spent most of his life living a version of himself that wasn’t authentic. The flashbacks show that Derek was probably the love of his life, but everything changed when Marsha became pregnant and the future he imagined for himself disappeared overnight.
That’s why this scene hits so hard. On the surface, it’s just Cal revisiting an old bar. But emotionally, it’s much bigger than that. He’s revisiting one of the few places connected to a life he never got to have. Every memory in that bar is tied to Derek, youth, freedom, and a version of himself that he feels he lost decades ago.
What makes the scene heartbreaking is that Cal isn’t really mourning Derek alone…he’s mourning an entire life. He’s mourning the choices he never got to make, the person he never got to become, and the happiness he feels was taken from him. You can see it all over his face. He clearly misses Derek, but he also clearly hates the life he’s built and the person he’s become.
It’s one of the rare moments in Euphoria where the audience is asked to sympathize with someone they normally wouldn’t. #euphoria
