Atsuhime was a Satsuma woman in the mid-1800s, adopted for political reasons and sent to Edo to marry the shougun. After his death in 1858, she became Tenshouin and stayed with the Tokugawa household even after Satsuma joined the forces overthrowing it. In 1868, she and Kazunomiya supported the peaceful surrender of Edo Castle, helping spare the city from a battle that could have killed huge numbers of civilians and soldiers. If Edo had been destroyed, the Tokyo people love today might not even exist in recognizable form.

Now imagine modern feminism discovering her. Political marriage? Patriarchy. Removed from home? Oppression. Expected to serve her husband's household? Oppression. Wonderful, we have solved the woman.

Except the Tokugawa household actually relied on Atsuhime's judgment. She became a pillar of the household and a source of advice during its final crisis. When she decided that peaceful surrender was the best albeit bittersweet option to preserve the dignity of people she cared about, they trusted her, and most would agree that they were glad that they listened to her. When her birth clan became its enemy, she chose the family she had married into and stood by it. Her strength was not escaping the institution. It was becoming extraordinarily capable inside it.

This is where modern feminism can become almost comically reductive. It treats gender like a Marxist class struggle: identify the structure, identify the oppressed class, and start handing out oppression points. Once Atsuhime's circumstances are classified as patriarchal, what she actually did with them becomes completely irrelevant.

But having obligations is not the same as being powerless. A woman can live within a traditional role and still possess judgment, authority, loyalty and enormous agency. She can become the person everyone else depends on when things go to hell.

Feminine strength does not have to mean escaping responsibility. Sometimes it means being strong enough to carry it. Modern feminism can tell you exactly which structures constrained Atsuhime. It can probably produce a very impressive diagram about them. What it struggles to explain is why, when the Tokugawa world was collapsing, everyone was looking to her.

You can count the patriarchal structures, assign oppression points, declare the case closed and congratulate yourself on having understood the woman. Meanwhile, the woman you just diagnosed as a victim is helping prevent Edo from becoming a battlefield and preserving the household everyone else was about to lose.

Feminists, at some point, maybe stop bitching like a retard in oppression Olympics and look at what the amazing women in history were actually doing. But you won't, because if you did, you will realize that all the patriarchy in the world can't explain away why you just suck at being a woman.

“Free Palestine” is not antisemitic by definition. It is, however, remarkably empty until you tell me what “free” means and how you intend to get there.

Two states? Fine. Then we have to discuss borders, security, Palestinian institutions, armed factions, recognition, and why repeated attempts at statehood have failed. That is politics.

But if your entire explanation is “the Zionists,” while the word somehow keeps functioning as a euphemism almost exclusively for Jews rather than the millions of non-Jewish Zionists, then at some point we should stop pretending not to notice what is happening.

And if “Free Palestine” means the maximalist version: Israel disappears, millions of Israelis somehow cease to be a political reality, and nobody has to explain what replaces it, then this is not liberation policy. It is privileged slogan politics conducted over the heads of the people who will actually die when the fantasy collides with reality.

Israel is not disappearing.

So there are basically two serious choices: build a viable Palestinian state alongside Israel, with institutions capable of governing and preventing armed groups from turning it into another launchpad for war; or continue an indefinite conflict in which Israel will keep insisting on controlling threats next door.

A slogan does not solve that.

So tell me what you mean by “Free Palestine.” If you mean two states, say so. If you mean something else, explain the mechanism.
