Friends, I was not overly familiar with Archbishop Fulton Sheen or his work until I was already ordained and teaching in the seminary.
At the prompting of my students, I purchased his tapes and listened to many of his retreats and sermons, quickly realizing just how impressive he was.
I now consider him one of my great heroes.
Bishop Fulton Sheen was an amazing man.
The beatification mass for Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen will take place on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Can't wait for it!

Friends, yesterday I had the pleasure of joining @TheoVon for an episode of “This Past Weekend.”
Our conversation will be released soon on Theo’s channels. I look forward to sharing it with you then.
Have you ever wondered why Catholics say, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed” before receiving Holy Communion?
These words come directly from the Gospel of Matthew, when a Roman centurion approached Jesus and asked Him to heal his servant. The centurion told Jesus that he was not worthy to have Him enter his home, but that he trusted Jesus could heal his servant simply by speaking a word.Jesus praised him for his great faith. (Matthew 8:5-13)
At Mass, Catholics use these same words before receiving the Eucharist. “Under my roof” refers to our own selves.
We are asking Jesus to enter into us.
When we say, “I am not worthy,” we acknowledge that we do not earn or deserve Christ through our own merits. We approach Him with humility.
But, we don’t stop there.“Only say the word and my soul shall be healed.”These words express our complete trust in Jesus. We recognize our unworthiness, but we also recognize His infinite mercy and His power to heal and transform us.
And because Catholics believe that Jesus is truly present, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the Eucharist, these words take on an even deeper meaning.
Before receiving Jesus, we humble ourselves, acknowledge our need for Him, and place our trust in His mercy

Who else still misses having Harper as our PM?
Canada was one of only a handful of nations that I had classified as suffering from Stage 5 Suicidal Empathy. I'm thinking of introducing the heretofore unchartered Stage 6 Suicidal Empathy.
Stephen Harper just said it clean.
The difficulties Canada faces cannot be blamed on Donald Trump.
In too many cases they stem from bad decisions by our own government.
That’s the whole file.
You can spend the next year blaming the Americans and making excuses for the last decade of failure.
Or you can finally admit the rot started at home.
Competitiveness.
Productivity.
Capital flight.
Housing.
Energy.
Trade readiness.
None of that was invented in Washington last month.
Harper’s point is simple.
This moment either becomes another round of excuses or the moment Canada stops making them.
One path leads to more managed decline.
The other leads to a country that can actually stand on its own feet.
Choose!
