i think people here accept way too easily how these big millionaires companies treat creators. after what happened to Roxana's artist years ago, the way i view them (mainly Kakao) totally changed, and I have no respect or admiration for them.

Tapas being unprofitable doesn’t automatically make Kakao blameless. If anything, that raises more questions about what Kakao did after acquiring it and why shutting it down was the chosen outcome.

If Tapas was truly such a poor-performing platform, why did it have so many successful and popular manhwas? Readers clearly valued it. And telling those readers to simply prove demand by buying the same works on other legal platforms makes no sense. Are we supposed to purchase the same title multiple times? What about titles that aren’t available anywhere else?

And why is so much of the responsibility being pushed onto piracy while the paying readers are barely mentioned? People spent real money on Tapas. They bought coins, unlocked episodes, and built libraries. Those readers supported the platform legally, and now they’re the ones losing access to what they paid for.

As for Kakao being “just another victim,” this is where I disagree. In business, acquisitions can absolutely be used to consolidate a market. There are even terms like “buy and kill” for acquiring a competitor and subsequently shutting down the competing product.

Tapas readers are not being unreasonable for questioning it, especially when the outcome is fewer choices for readers and potentially pushes them toward Kakao’s own ecosystem.

Piracy needs to be addressed, absolutely. But companies also need to take responsibility for the customers who already paid them. You can’t ask readers to prove demand with their wallets and then treat their purchases as disposable when you shut down the platform.
