261 years ago today, a 29 year old country lawyer with nine days of legislative experience stood up in the Virginia House of Burgesses and basically threatened the King of England with assassination.
His name was Patrick Henry. He had been a burgess for nine days. He was wearing a borrowed wig. The Stamp Act had just arrived in the colonies and the senior members of the House, men like Peyton Randolph and Richard Henry Lee, were quietly trying to figure out how to politely object.
Henry did not politely object.
He stood up and introduced seven resolutions. The first four were respectful. The fifth said Virginians could only be taxed by Virginians. The sixth said any other tax was illegal. The seventh said anyone who claimed otherwise was an enemy of the colony.
Then he gave the speech.
"Caesar had his Brutus. Charles the First his Cromwell. And George the Third..."
The Speaker of the House jumped up and shouted "Treason! Treason!"
Henry paused. Looked around the chamber. Looked at the Speaker. Finished his sentence.
"...may profit by their example. If this be treason, make the most of it."
The fifth resolution passed by one vote. The Speaker had it stricken from the record the next morning. It did not matter. Henry's friends had already leaked all seven resolutions to printers up and down the seaboard, presented as if all of them had passed. By August every colonial paper had printed them.
The Stamp Act riots started six weeks later. Stamp distributors were tarred and feathered from Boston to Charleston. The Sons of Liberty formed in the wake of the resolves. Thomas Jefferson, then a 22 year old law student, was standing in the doorway of the House that day. He said decades later he had never heard anything like it.
John Adams called Patrick Henry the man who "gave the first impulse to the ball of revolution."
Lexington was ten years and 11 months away. The fuse was lit on May 29, 1765.

Israel is running a media op, and America has lots of useful idiots willing to make a buck on it. Meanwhile, we ignore a genocide being committed by “America’s best ally,” and fight a war for them.
