Then: Canada removes its tariffs first.

“We can handle him.”

Then: caves on the digital services tax.

“We have the best deal… and we will get an even better one.”

Then the Gordie Howe Bridge: Canada pays the costs and debt first. Only after that is the leftover revenue split with the Americans for 15 years.

When pressed, Carney’s defence was that he could have explained it better… while wearing a cowboy hat at Stampede.

Tough talk for the cameras.
Concessions in the actual deals.
And a Prime Minister who treats “who cares?” as a governing philosophy.

This is not strength.
This is managed decline with better lighting.

We have a system, mandated by law, to limit supply and keep prices artificially high.
We also have prices set by government mandated boards.
So yes, we do subsidize dairy farmers in Canada, we just legislate that consumers do it instead of taxpayers.

An American businessman is on vacation and sees a Mexican fisherman come into port with just a few big fish. He asks how long it took to catch them, and the fisherman says only a little while.

The American asks why he doesn’t stay out longer to catch more fish, and the fisherman says he has enough to feed his family. So what do you do with the rest of your time, the American asks. The fisherman says, I sleep late, fish a little, play with my kids, take a siesta with my wife, and in the evenings I stroll into the village, sip wine, and play guitar with my friends. I have a full and busy life, senor.

The American scoffs and says, I have an M B A and I could help you. You should spend more time fishing, and with the profits buy a bigger boat. With the profits from the bigger boat, buy several boats, eventually a whole fleet. Instead of selling to a middleman, you’d sell directly to the cannery, eventually opening your own cannery. You’d control the product, processing, and distribution.

The fisherman asks, but senor, how long will this all take? Fifteen, twenty years, the American says. Then what? Then, my friend, that’s when it gets interesting, the American says. When the time is right, you’d announce an I P O and sell your company stock to the public, and become very rich, you’d make millions.

Millions, senor? Then what? Then you’d retire, move to a small fishing village, sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, and stroll into the village in the evenings to sip wine and play guitar with your friends.

The tariffs multiplied. The leverage disappeared. Now the excuses are falling apart.

🚨 FACT CHECKING - Carney’s claim to Canada is creating jobs at twice the rate of the United States.

The actual numbers from January to May 2026:

Canada: net loss of 25,000 jobs
United States: net gain of 825,000 jobs

January: Canada -25,000
February: Canada -84,000
March: Canada +14,000
April: Canada -18,000
May: Canada +88,000 (and they celebrated like they just won the lottery)

Meanwhile the U.S. added 130k, 151k, 228k, 177k, and 139k in those same months.

This isn’t a rounding error. It’s not “context.” It’s a straight-up lie from the Prime Minister of Canada.

When your entire economic pitch rests on pretending the numbers say the opposite of what they actually say, you’re not leading the country.

You’re managing the narrative while the country keeps losing ground.

Wrote for La Presse for 25 years—without compensation. Was proud of it.

My column was discontinued this Spring after I posted a message on Facebook expressing concern that Ottawa’s media tax-credit program could compromise editorial independence by encouraging pro-Liberal and anti-American narratives.

This week, I was stunned by a column from Francis Vailles in which he essentially wrote that he never imagined he could hate Americans—all Americans—so much. Vailles is a respected and talented columnist whom I have read regularly for years.

Although La Presse stopped publishing my work, I continue to pay for a monthly subscription because I believe Canadians should support independent journalism whenever they can. But Vailles’ comments shocked me. Even more troubling, his column became one of La Presse’s most-read articles of the week.

He described feeling repulsed when seeing an American flag in a movie and abandoning online chess games upon discovering that his opponent was American. These are deeply personal expressions of hostility toward an entire nationality.

Democracies need free, independent and balanced media. This was not balanced journalism. It normalized hostility toward another country and risked encouraging readers to feel the same way.

Our democracy is increasingly unhealthy. Canadians have been bombarded with biased messaging for years now, and the problem appears to be getting worse. La Presse is certainly not alone.

I do not know how we get out of this mess. But I hope Canadians will eventually receive more balanced information—reporting that helps them understand what is actually happening in the world, rather than commentary driven by hostility toward Americans, or anyone else for that matter. A columnist’s responsibility is to inform and challenge the public.

This crossed the line into pure advocacy.

On today’s episode of “Carney Can’t Make a Deal”…

@brianlilley just laid it out plain: Mark Carney doesn’t actually want a trade deal with the United States.

He says Carney keeps sending the Americans letters that basically say “let’s have more discussions about the discussions we already had.” Meanwhile, the U.S. side is asking for actual fixes and resolutions — not another round of photo ops and vague proposals.

Lilley’s point is brutal but accurate: fighting with Trump is politically valuable for Carney right now. His base loves the “elbows up” theatre. A lot of them are retired, their money is in the S&P 500, and plant jobs drying up in Ontario or Alberta doesn’t hit their retirement accounts.

So why settle when you can keep the fight going and stay popular with the people who voted for you?

Meanwhile, 50% tariffs on over 500 Canadian products are still scheduled to hit August 19th. Mexico is already in active rounds of talks. We’re still getting “we’ll intensify negotiations.”

This isn’t negotiation. This is managed decline dressed up as resistance.

Carney had one job: protect Canadian workers and get a deal done.

He’s failing on purpose because the failure polls better than the fix.
