RAILA HOUR:25 STORIES PROJECT
23/25.
As with most people of my generation, one tends to encounter Raila Odinga during those restless, hyper-energetic years of youth, driven by a refusal to find peace until societal wrongs are righted.
My initial alignment with his movement began during my university days, actively defending ODM long before a face-to-face meeting ever occurred.
The critical turning point came after the 2013 general election, following that loss, when the opportunistic political class routinely abandoned his camp to align with the new locus of state power, I consciously sought him out, leading to our first definitive meeting.
Following our initial meeting, I approached Raila Odinga with a pragmatic assessment, the 2013 election was behind us, and immediate preparation for the next cycle was imperative.
Impressed by this proactive, forward-looking strategic outlook, he integrated me into the core think tank tasked with architecting the campaign toward the 2017 general election.
Despite having just been unsuccessful in my own elective bid, I expected unyielding commitment to the cause from all party leaders. I perceived the then-Secretary General whose loyalty felt lukewarm and compromised as a liability to our trajectory and driven by this dissatisfaction, a few aligned comrades and I executed a swift, decisive intervention to push him out.
Taking a page from Odinga’s own political playbook, I bypassed conventional bureaucratic channels and directly declared myself the new Secretary General of ODM.
Despite the early setbacks of losing the Kanduyi primaries and my initial bid for the Nairobi Senatorial seat, Raila Odinga recognized my intrinsic political value and formally entrusted me with a powerful role.
Upon taking office, I initiated an immediate institutional overhaul, redefining a position that had historically devolved into a subservient, bureaucratic, and overly conformist entity. I transformed the secretariat into a hyper-aggressive communications hub and a formidable operational fortress. My tenure was defined by an unyielding, tireless defense of my party leader, a willingness to trade fierce verbal blows with political adversaries, and a rigorous restructuring of the party machinery.
This relentless executive style, combined with deep-seated grassroots mobilization, ultimately culminated in absolute electoral vindication during the 2022 general election, where I decisively captured the Nairobi Senatorial seat with a staggering mandate of over 700,000 votes.
To live by the ethos and spirit of Raila Odinga is to inherit a foundational, uncompromising courage.
This bond transcended standard political mentorship, it was a profound ideological adoption, cementing my identity as a true political son of Baba. The transition from his lifetime into his enduring legacy has changed nothing about my tactical posture or operational execution. Every battle fought, every asset deployed, and every position defended today remains entirely consistent with the actions I took when he was alive.
I received a call on the morning of 15th October 2026 from an Odinga family member that my party leader had passed on.
The taste of life left me the exact moment he did.
I looked at food and felt nothing, I looked at my clothes and couldn't care less how I presented myself to a world that suddenly felt entirely hollow,The one person who truly understood the map of my mind, the one person who saw my potential when the world turned away, was gone,I remember a certain paralysis of thought and purpose.
Then came the sudden, brutal rush of reality,We were on a flight to India.
I sat trapped in that airplane seat, staring into the dark out the window, and my mind became a flood of memories of Baba, traveling backward in time, remembering the very first moment I met him. I thought about how he looked at me and made a decision on me at once, seeing something in me I hadn't even fully recognized myself.
