The Baths themselves were a strange pipe dream; much too large and remote for SF, lovely but ultimately hardly used and falling into apathetic disrepair.

The site itself is majestic. Jutting into the Pacific at the foot of a great hike, with priceless views all around.

What kind of venue would look and feel amazing bathed in thick fog? What institution would benefit from great sunsets every evening? What would feel rewarding and impressive to visit from afar?

We could build anything. San Francisco certainly has the money to do it. And whatever it would be, the right bar is the Greatest In The World.

The symbolic power of a great tower on the shore of the Pacific, shining a light toward the eternal journey westward, feels appropriate. As would be our answer to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Or maybe even the home of the Space Force. We should use the site for something really impressive and ambitious. Adolph Sutro dreamt big, and we should dream bigger!

I changed my mind on minimum wage after reviewing the data. I used to believe in letting the free market handle it, like most of you.

However, when California raised the minimum wage for fast-food workers, it increased prices for consumers by pennies (~1-2%).

There was zero downside... it didn't drive massive automation, nor did it cause businesses to shutter.

Exactly the same result as Australia and other American cities... no changes in jobs; restaurants didn't close.

We are at record profits for corporations.

We are at a record low in unemployment in America over the past five years.

We are at maximum social unrest due to wealth disparity.

We should WANT to see the lowest-earning Americans go from $12 to $15, to $20, and then to $25 an hour over the next decade.

This isn't virtue signaling; this is good business!

Why?

Individuals earning under $40,000 a year spend 100% of their income.

They save nothing... they just spend it at the same companies they earn it at (Amazon, McDonald's, the Apple Store, DoorDash, Uber, etc).

It increases monetary velocity.

Take the time to research all of this, and you'll find the only downside is for teenage workers, who aren't worth $15-20 an hour. It does depress those jobs, so we should keep teenagers at a lower rate.

A key stat that every environmentalist who is serious about solving climate change should know:

The US Navy has put into operation over 400 nuclear reactors without a single failure that resulted in any radioactive release.

That is equivalent to the entire total number of civilian reactors deployed worldwide, but the Navy’s reactors are literally deployed in BOATS IN THE WATER, that continually move, rock, get shot at, etc.

There are non-trivial engineering challenges, but the core reality is that safe, clean, abundant nuclear is a matter of political will, intelligence, and organizational culture.
