A day late for the Feast of Saint Matthew, but I had an idea for a comic yesterday that I realized I’d never actually seen anyone make.

At some point, Matthew had to sit down and write Matthew 18:17:

“If he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a… tax collector.”

I just imagine the former tax collector getting to that part, stopping, staring at the page, and thinking:

“…really?”

So, slightly late for his feast day, but I had to throw my hat into the ring. 😂

Saint Matthew, Apostle, Evangelist, and Tax Collector… pray for us.

I do like the way that you said that. But I do not presume to know the Lord’s final judgment of me. Catholics wholeheartedly affirm Ephesians 1:4–5. God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world and destined us for adoption through Christ. Salvation begins with God’s grace; I could never initiate or earn it myself.
Where we seem to disagree is what you infer from that passage. It doesn’t say that, having received that grace, I subsequently become incapable of freely rejecting it. In fact, the same Paul who wrote Ephesians 1 also gives Christians the warnings I quoted above about persevering and falling.
So when you tell me, “Bec, you are saved,” I can happily say yes! That’s exactly why I began my previous answer by saying, “I know that I have been saved by God’s grace.” 😊
The question between us isn’t whether salvation is God’s supernatural gift through Christ. We agree on that. The question is whether Scripture teaches that, once we receive that gift, our subsequent rejection of God’s grace by our own free choices / actions becomes impossible.

I know that I have been saved by God’s grace, and I have confident hope of eternal salvation in Christ. But I don’t presume that I am incapable of subsequently rejecting that grace. Even Paul disciplined himself lest, after preaching to others, he himself should be “disqualified” (1 Cor 9:27), and warned, “Let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Cor 10:12).
There are several passages that make Paul’s position more nuanced than a simple “I made a profession of faith, therefore I possess infallible certainty about my final salvation.” For example, Philippians 2:12 says to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”; Romans 11:20–22 warns Christians to continue in God’s kindness, otherwise they too may be cut off.
So my confidence is in Christ, not in a claim that my future free choices are already guaranteed.
And that’s a very different conversation than this was about, so are we just attacking Catholicism in general, Bryan? Because it WAS the Church before all these other denominations appeared, so I’d be looking into researching the early Church as well as the Protestant Reformation if I were you. That’s exactly what I’ve been doing for the past 3 years, and why I moved from being Protestant to Catholic last year. I started out precisely to argue someone else OUT of Catholicism.

Mate, if you’re not focused on the meditations of the mysteries, that’s a you problem. “The first mystery is,” “the fruit of this mystery is,” (that part helps me focus, because I am aiming to “obtain” the fruits of the mysteries, as pointed out in the final prayer of the actual rosary: “grant, we beseech thee, that while MEDITATING on these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may IMITATE what they contain and OBTAIN what they promise”)… if you’re just saying the Hail Mary’s and and not focusing on the mysteries, you’ve missed the whole point 🙄
