Congratulations to @PietroDiSantoMD on successfully completing his PhD.
Pietro joined the @MayoClinicCV family in January in the divisions of Interventional Cardiology and Critical Care Cardiology.
During his training he published over 100 papers and his thesis on transradial access for pci just finished and his last project - an RCT on rivaroxaban for prevention of rao is complete.
Thanks to Prof George Wells for supervising Pietro with me and getting him to the finish line.
As is now tradition for all PhD grads a message from F1 and @RGrosjean. It took a long time but @PietroDiSantoMD got it done.
OPTABLATE changes the ablation conversation. 🎯🩻
This editorial highlights the takeaway: margins matter most.
Ensure ≥6–10 mm for surgical‑like outcomes and >10 mm to all but eliminate local recurrence.
Let’s all go for 10.

Can we fix incomplete liver ablation on the spot?🩻
A PET/CT‑guided workflow with rapid biopsy flagged 14% of CLMs for immediate reablation.
Margins matter: >5 mm cut local progression; >10 mm = none.
Real‑time detection. Better tumor control.

How safe is liver thermal ablation, really? 🔥🩻
A 15‑year meta‑analysis shows near‑zero 90‑day mortality and just a 3% major complication rate for percutaneous ablation of malignant liver tumors.
Strong evidence. Reassuring safety.

Same kidney cancer, different paths, same long‑term outcomes. 🩺 A nationwide Danish study shows ablation, resection, and nephrectomy deliver comparable progression risk for T1a RCC, with ablation offering shorter stays and fewer complications.

We're proud to recognize a portion of our third-year radiology residents who presented at Radiology Research Night, led by Dr. Ian Mark.
Kudos to @MayoRadiology and Drs. Fletcher, Swartz, Nashawaty, Gonzalez & Swartz for an outstanding evening of scholarship and collaboration!
Medical education keeps swinging between reforms and reversals—pass/fail vs tiered grades, condensed vs extended pre-clerkship, more vs less restricted duty hours—largely because we lack good evidence about what actually works. Our piece in @JAMAInternalMed argues for a better path forward.
In clinical medicine, we strive for robust experimental evidence to guide care. We should hold medical education to a similar standard because the care patients receive depends on how well we train physicians. Yet fewer than 1 in 5 medical education studies are experimental, and most have significant limitations.
We need randomized trials in medical education. Conducting these is feasible and ethical; for instance, medical schools already randomly assign students to sites, clerkship sequences, and so on. We should leverage this randomization to generate reliable evidence about what works.
