Oscar season is looking a little like "where my girls (female directors) at?"

Exclusive First Look: Maggie Gyllenhaal wrote and directed the short film 'Flesh Impact,' which is timed to Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday and will play at the Venice Film Festival. “I find her acting so fascinating, weird and wild and very joyful, mixed with terribly upsetting all at once,” Gyllenhaal tells @beccamford. “I kind of wondered what would've happened if she'd had 60 years to herself. What might be different about the work that she would do now?”

Gyllenhaal used that question to craft a love letter to Monroe in a 17-minute short film that explores different paths her life may have taken her. ‘Flesh Impact’ follows two versions of Monroe, played by Oscar-winner Ellen Burstyn and Dakota Johnson.

Now that Christopher Nolan’s star-studded adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’ has established itself as a box office victor (it earned some $264 million globally in its opening weekend), it’s safe to say that it will also be a big Oscar contender—and a likely winner.
