you need to be mentally ill to be some sort of popular streamer or internet eceleb and it doesn’t bode well how much influence this class of people has on the future of politics

[Roko 🐉 @RokoMijic]

I think this story about AI takeover is very low probability because AIs/AICorps are simply not able to keep their alpha secret for long enough.

Technology that could reliably, peacefully and nonviolently coup the world overnight is possible but it will simply never happen because a cruder version of that tech will violently and unreliably coup parts of the world over several months or weeks first, likely decades before the clean version would have been possible.

The AI coups will be messy affairs, and probably megadeath events.

the casual discussion amongst silicon valley elites of global war with China is perhaps the single greatest piece of evidence that they should not be permitted anywhere near the levers of power

Usually this is false.
Apocalyptic millennialism is antithetical to family life and romantic commitment; it posits ends that justify any possible means; it isolates the elect from the rest of mankind; it [1/2]

@Object_Zero_ @Andercot Well we'll have to do it ourselves with balloons and whatnot - atmosphere isn't gonna geoengineer itself

@Object_Zero_ @Andercot That’s what the sulfur dioxide is for

@Object_Zero_ @Andercot That earth will become jungle earth - personally bearish, although still big on equatorial solar-industrial zone

[Beck Iverson @BeckIvrsn]

@Object_Zero_ @Andercot Real stratospheric injection patriots have fact checked this as false

With all the tax initiatives on the ballot this year, we need a limit on ballot initiatives for budgetary matters

The average person does not understand the complexities of state/local budgets nor the tradeoffs that comes with adjusting revenues/expenses enough to decide on them

[Fernando Borretti @zetalyrae]

I know many people despairing over AI because their job is now being a meat proxy for AIs, or their intellectual project is now unnecessary.

The promised compensation for this loss is UBI, i.e. you will be on welfare forever.

In California, to get environmental approval to build a train you must count bumblebees, one by one, by hand.

There’s an argument that both the Han dynasty and the Roman Empire failed due to a massive expansion of property/land tax exemptions in a very similar vein to prop 13.

[Beck Iverson @BeckIvrsn]

@mimi10v3 A few years ago? Was the pay from previous jobs good enough to just live off savings?

[Sam D'Amico @sdamico]

this is why I support a multimillionaire wealth tax: scrapping prop 13 after the first $2M

This aesthetic was crystallized in this 2024 Super Bowl DoorDash ad, which I wrote at the time “envisions paradise as a suburban home packed to the rafters with Products”

It has been interesting to watch San Francisco as it has been stripped of nearly all of its original countercultural garments (distrust/apathy towards The Cathedral, high-openness, suspicion of credentialism, original thought, etc.) and has donned a new zeitgeist that is the absolute antithesis of its former ethos.

Everywhere you look resembles third-world, low-trust, social hierarchy jostling . "How much did you raise bro? Did you get the Sequoia check? You don't work at a Tier 1 lab? You didn't... didn't go to Stanford?".

The city that was once great because of its disgust with these sorts of people has now been corrupted by them as they have min-maxed Machiavellian social dynamics to accumulate power in the valley like XP points. Power which is now completely divorced from any genuine talent, skill, or benevolence. All that matters is that you are able to Scam a16z out of $15M (@cluely) because you are a poaster and you are anointed with SF Clout™

This infestation is so deep that even those who rightfully call it out are still willful participants in the exact culture they so detest (check her bio).

Over the past two months, we have been leading a coalition to mitigate one of the most severe bugs in open source software found in recent memory, php2shell, found as part of our Patch the Planet initiative. https://t.co/rBsz7lrlwo

[NSA Cyber @NSACyber]

Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.

this is just wrong: these vulns were found by defenders using Daybreak rather than attackers. It's just evidence Glasswing didn't go far enough, possibly due to capacity constraints. It's also very likely that March Mythos was not as good as Sol/Astra of September
