For those in Barcelona next week attending #FENS2026@FENSorg, I'm presenting a poster on Thursday! Swing by to hear me yap about some cool 🐸 brainstem neurons and their potential roles in motor control :)

We look at using Ca2+ loading and Ca2+ imaging for revealing #xenopus cells coupled by #gapjunctions. Although our cell type's limitations produced negative results, we thought it important to publish + encourage people to try in more amenable systems!

Here, we examine dopamine’s role in modulating fictive and real locomotion and find it acutely shifts the network towards tunneling motor programs in larval Drosophila.
Recently gave a talk and presented a poster at the Motor Circuits Meeting 2025 in St Andrews! Must thank the committee for letting me help organise (+ attend for free...!). Great science, great people and great impatience to see everyone again
Thank you Maarten Zwart @maartenfzwart for sharing your experience of fee-free #OApublishing with @bellaxuying in @J_Exp_Biol via our #ReadAndPublish agreement with @univofstandrews @StAndrewsUniLib. Read the paper https://t.co/vkiDmaY8sN

The study was funded by The Institute for Behavioural and Neural Sciences, an organisation that supports interdisciplinary research at St Andrews.
Dr Stefan Pulver from the School of Psychology and Neuroscience explained why this funding matters.
“This project has been collaborative from the start”.
One of the labs heading up the project is run by Dr Maarten Zwart. He explained to That’s TV why the project has demanded so much collaboration.
Mapping a beetle’s wiggle could help battle global food security issues
That’s TV spoke to Bella Xu Ying, a fourth year undergraduate student at The University of St Andrews who has spearheaded the research.
