In 2006, I was a journalist with UBC-TV. We were removed from the 15 acres of prime land at Nakasero belonging to UBC, which was then given out to private developers to construct a hotel to host CHOGM delegates in 2007.

That same year, Shimon demonstration school and teachers’ college was also demolished to pave way for a CHOGM hotel on the 15 acre piece of land.
CHOGM came and went, but the said hotels were not in place for the mentioned purpose, and controversy surrounded the land for years.

In 2011, Gov’t forcefully evicted over 1750 families from the Naguru-Nakawa housing estate to make room for a “modern satellite city” project on the 162 acres. That “development” doesn’t exist to-date.

These, and many more controversial land give-aways come to mind when we hear of plans to give away the city square for another “development”.
City square is one of the very few green spaces left in the city, so to learn that it is to be replaced with a private business structure is bizarre!

Dr. Kizza Besigye - an icon of our struggle, a pillar of resilience, and a true elder of the Ugandan liberation movement.

For decades, Dr. Besigye has consistently chosen conviction over comfort. He has remained steadfast and completely unyielding in the face of brutal persecution, multiple unlawful detentions, and constant threats to his life.

The Museveni regime continues to harass and torment him in the hope that they will break his spirit. Yet, through it all, he continues to stand firm - his spirit unbroken.

While we can never repay him for his enduring leadership and refusal to bow to tyranny, we can stand with him in his hour of need. I am grateful to our friends who have launched this solidarity campaign to raise funds for his welfare and mounting legal costs while he and his colleagues continue to languish in jail.

I encourage all of us to be part of this effort. Let us contribute whatever we can to support this cause. My wife @BarbieItungoK and I are making a modest contribution of UGX 5,000,000.

By standing together during these challenging times, we send a clear message to the regime: they can jail our bodies, but they can never jail our solidarity. Their attempts to throw us into disarray will not yield. Together, we shall overcome.

I am hurt, angry and anxious. @kizzabesigye1 has been returned to his prison cell, and his sisters who have been caring for him at the prison hospital have been sent away.

He is still extremely weak and needs family care. Prison conditions will undermine his recovery. Yet Judge Baguma has brushed aside his medical condition and carried on with this sham trial. They may even carry him to court tomorrow.
