Southwark Council is protecting support services for young people and older residents and has taken action to secure the future of The Nest and Dementia Advisor services.

The council’s Executive today confirms both will be protected and continue under the council’s new Joint Administration.

The Nest has helped support the mental health of thousands of young people, with a wellbeing hub in Peckham and community services.

Southwark’s Dementia Advisors have provided advice to people with a diagnosis of dementia and their families.

In Refugee Week, two members of Southwark Council’s Executive have written to the Home Secretary to express deep concerns at the Government’s Reforming Asylum Support and Enforcing Family Returns proposals.

Cllr Rebecca Corn, Southwark Council’s Executive Member for Education and Care, said: “Children are children. Their welfare and best interests should never depend on their immigration status.

“We have a statutory duty to support children and young people, including care experienced young people, and to support them into adulthood.

“These proposals would reduce support for some of the most vulnerable in our communities and use immigration law to pull support away from some of the most vulnerable young people we look after, often at the very point they are trying to build an independent life. We are deeply concerned that they risk replacing a fundamental principle of protection based on a child's needs, with support based on their immigration status.

“We cannot stay silent and we are asking the Government to think again.”

Cllr David Watson, Southwark Council’s Executive Member for Community Safety and Engagement, said: “We believe people seeking safety should be treated with dignity, compassion and humanity.

“That is why we are deeply concerned by proposals that would reduce support for vulnerable families and young people, and by any suggestion that force could be used against children during immigration enforcement. These measures risk causing lasting harm to some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.

“Southwark will continue to stand alongside our faith groups, voluntary organisations and local communities in championing a borough where everyone is treated with fairness, respect and dignity.”

Unpacking the #Labour pledge for #Southwark: “Free Culture Pass”
Access is always a powerful promise, but as the headline policy on culture it reveals a very privileged world view; that arts in Southwark exist to be consumed. Supporting creativity and true access is about respect and support for culture and arts in communities, classrooms, studios, markets, high streets. The reality is that space is limited, rents are high, artists work several jobs and still struggle to pay rent, let alone buy materials and create. The reality is that the arts and culture is yet another area this council has consistently neglected in favour of developers. The reality is our culture is being betrayed and displaced. In #NorthWalworth the famous Latin-run businesses in the railway arches at Elephant have been given notice to vacate to make way for the development, dismantling an important hub of our Latin community. This council took money from the same developers to fund Latin dance events in front of these businesses while allowing the heart of our Latin community to be betrayed. That is appropriation and disrespect in the extreme — celebrating the aesthetics of a culture while forcing out the real people and their livelihoods. Southwark is famous for being a home for artists too — but how many artists are able to survive while creating here? How many can access services and professional training?! What is the policy on protecting our people and our livelihoods, the businesses and traders and artists that make up the culture?! True access is also about education: What is the policy on the teaching of arts in schools and colleges that allow children and young people to access the arts, investment in arts based SEND, support for artists?! These are the policies that protect and support art and culture. These are the policies that make culture accessible. Not free tickets.

Unpacking the #Labour pledge for #Southwark: “Youth Guarantee”
A Youth Guarantee should mean prioritising young people’s real needs — but this pledge doesn’t do that. In #NorthWalworth, where almost half the population is aged 20–34, many young adults are already struggling to build stable lives. Care leavers trying to live independently, young parents raising children without secure housing, single-person households facing rising rents, and young workers on minimum wage priced out of their own community. Many are living with the long-term impacts of exposure to deprivation, violence, instability, and insecure housing. Many of the most vulnerable are being moved away from support networks into temporary housing. People here know that talk of training schemes and short-term programmes will not fix this. Young people need secure homes, stable incomes, and services that recognise the realities of their lives — not corporate-style pledges that look good in a manifesto but fail to address the pressures facing residents every day. Without tackling housing affordability properly, insecure work, and the lack of long-term support including true investment in youth services, these kinds of promises are the surface level window dressing of a corporate show home, while young people continue to be left out in the cold, pushed further into insecurity.
