The dienone–phenol rearrangement has been known for 100+ years and is a staple of undergraduate courses (migratory aptitudes!). Today we report on its lesser-known cousin: the quinol–enedione rearrangement.

@okonski_s I finished my masters and jumped straight into a PhD programme as I had my heart set on becoming an academic... If I knew then what I know now, I'd probably have stopped at my honours degree, wouldn't have bothered with a masters. I finished up and went straight to industry.
@JoburgMetrobus@CityofJoburgZA@CoJTransport You really need to consider more outlets to top up cards. Not everyone goes to Gandhi Square or near Thuso House. Please consider looking at retail stores as an option
The people who we mentor are not us and their goals are not usually our goals. So, instead of focusing on what we would do, we can help them focus on what they should do in light of:
-their priorities
-their choices
-their strengths
-their path
PhDs: your dissertation topic is less relevant to finding a role outisde of academia than your *skills*.
Here's a 🧵 on how to translate skills you already have into corpspeak using examples from my own PhD work experience:
I’m so sick of academics who make PhD students and postdocs feel bad about themselves. I see it happen frequently and it’s awful.
If you’re one of those people, please stop and consider how you can support them instead. Our early career scholars deserve better.
@OpenAcademics
The chemistry journal Heterocycles suspended publication in December 2023, and it is far from unique. A January 2024 study of over 7.4 million studies found that just under 28% were not preserved online. What happens when academic journals disappear?

If you're struggling with your mental health, it's important to remember that you are not alone. Millions of people around the world face similar challenges, and there is no shame in reaching out for help. Whether it's talking to a trusted friend, seeking therapy, or exploring medication options, prioritizing your mental well-being is a sign of strength and courage.
With lots of new followers here, it’s probably time to post this again. 💜
These are some of the daily reminders I wish I could have had when I was a PhD student.
More #AcademicMentalHealth art with the wonderful @LuciaTypes coming hopefully later this year. ☺️
Please read this absolutely BRILLIANT thread here by @IR_SP8 for #YoungScientistNetworking - from early inspirations to overcoming obstacles, making key decisions and taking your shot. Well done my friend!
Great advice on prioritizing projects:
1. Is it with people I trust to be good scientists?
2. Am I looking forward to meetings with collaborators?
3. Is it interesting to me?
4. Does it fit with my professional identity?
5. Does data collection go well?
6. Will results be robust?
..when I finish this paper
..when I climb that ladder
..when I get that award
..when I get that job
..when I complete this task
The future is always busy, don't forget to live now.
It's time to stop dumping thankless tasks on women.
Women get more asks than men to serve on committees, plan events, and take notes. They're more likely to be penalized if they say no—and taken for granted if they say yes.
Work should be divided equitably by role, not gender.
