Popped out to get some milk last night and busted this fella pinching bottles of olive oil. I started filming after I saw him sneak three more bottles into his coat.

I showed security and we worked together to intervene and prevent the theft. He abandoned his bag in the scuffle, which contained a woman’s purse, clothes, more supermarket items. I doubt he acquired them legitimately.

The police were called and I hung around in case he came back to pick up ‘his’ stuff. After 15 mins, they still hadn’t arrived. The exasperated store manager told me it happens every day and that thieves are emboldened by the limited police presence and their slow response. I doubt the police will chase up all the evidence I’ve got. I didn’t even get a crime number. It happens all too often. Part and parcel.

This morning it was reported that convenience stores have endured a five-fold explosion in shoplifting. It’s a crimewave that cannot be allowed to continue. But it has risen so sharply precisely because it has been allowed to continue.

Many thieves are well-known to the police and local community, as I’m sure this fella is. Policing them should not be the responsibly of bystanders and security guards with limited powers.

This can all be changed with a sufficient will to act.
