@StuartLock And yet the 2025 inspection framework explicitly promotes practive which is “…evidence informed” and is based on “…high quality research” at least 4 times.
One week into implementing mobile phone pouches, and some early observations stand out:
✅ Fewer students leaving lessons to visit the toilet
✅ No instances of families contacting the school about student incidents before staff have been able to communicate with them directly
While it’s still early days, these initial indicators suggest a positive impact on students maintaining clear, timely communication between school and home.
I’m looking forward to seeing how these trends develop over the coming weeks.
Occam’s teacher: a teacher which makes the fewest number of assumptions they can when designing and delivering instruction. This increases their responsiveness and reduces the curse of knowledge.
Busy day do far at the CogSciSci conference. We have @adamboxer1 explaining why research is important but not as important as classroom level strategies
🚩UK Dept of Ed Study: Popular US school mental health program has no "statistically significant" effect on emotional difficulties, and actually INCREASES problems 9-12 months after intervention, with worst outcomes in schools with no prior SBMH programs. Earns "DO NOT ADOPT" recommendation:
“We would not recommend YAM to be delivered in English schools.”

Retrieval practice is going wrong in a lot of classrooms, why? It usually works best in the middle of a pipeline: after explanation, before performance.
Great conversation yesterday evening with @clairelbills and Nathan Gynn on @TTRadioOfficial. We discussed the value of consultants, edugurus and influencers in schools. Missed it? Heres your opportunity to tune in again:

Seven Lethal Mutations of Self-Determination Theory
@ValentinaDevid and Samuel Derkse discuss 7 ‘lethal mutations’ of SDT that appear logical but hollow out the theory and undermine its workings.

This matches my experience, too.
It’s well-intentioned, but teams pursue so many individual ideas that none get chosen.
Don Shula’s quote comes to mind: “The problem with most leaders today is they don’t stand for anything. Leadership implies movement towards something…”

Science is formed through recall of knowledge of people long since passed.
Creating classrooms that allow pupils to deeply 'understand' and discover science does not make a scientist. Allowing them to recall it does.
