@gabehornesquire I’m not sure Zeppelin was seen as *that* cool in the 90s (although they did have their descendants in Soundgarden type bands and other metal bands so perhaps I’m understating). But yeah Stones’ longevity did end up lowering their cool. Think at this point its doable though.
The kids like Zeppelin from my experience. Rolling Stones gets less pushed onto them/canonized in large part because the folks curating can’t find the obvious gist/narratives of the band to hook them in like they do with others. Failure of mythology.
The Rolling Stones are too bluesy for Gen Z. That’s the long and short of it. Bands like the Beach Boys/Beatles maintain a large young fanbase because they never expressed themselves as rough and rowdy in the same way the dad rock bands did. Same goes for Led Zeppelin.
@jef_fh I think certain rock bands still definitely hold up in terms of interest from younger folks. Cultural moments can help but also just explaining better how counterculture the Stones were while still being a big mainstream band could probably work too. Just don’t think we do that.
@thewillmorgs19 I don’t think early Wilco or Uncle Tupelo is ever gonna be hailed by younger folks as YHF. Perhaps as they get older but not during youth, I imagine. But the Stones aren’t gonna die off or anything.
@thewillmorgs19 Yeah, obviously country is still a giant deal. But it’s a giant deal that’s partitioned away a bit. Also not looked as something to seek if you’re not already inclined. It’s definitely a bit dependent on the demographic but some genres have more crossover history than others.
@Chuck0slovakia I think country is extremely popular…with people who grew with country. But it’s also a polarizing genre due to demographics. Straight blues is not a standard but it’s still acknowledged as “something to respect” by those who aren’t initially familiar with the genre.
Another aside: if any aspect of the Stones’ music would be inaccessible to the youth, it’s much more likely to be the prevalence of country music in their “classic period” rather than the blues influence. Country is much harder to sell as “cool” to folks who aren’t familiar.
(The Stones are amazing to me, to be clear. And obviously there are wild narratives to be found in the band’s history. But they don’t neatly tie up the band in most minds and they also lasted for so long. But I imagine you will get young fans if you introduce them with enthusiasm
whenever people say the eagles suck they usually just mean they hate “hotel california” and they cannot name another eagles song. it’s such a tired ass take
I’m surprised Miseducation has boxed out the Score legacy-wise so thoroughly now. I get it in a sense (especially album- perspective-wise) but the Score was also a huge phenomenon (and I think it’s the better album by a tad)
@paulxt Mista Don’t Play, Cold Vein, Devil’s Night, Miss E…So Addictive, In Search Of…, Labor Days, Pain Is Love, I’m Serious, Disposable Arts, Stillmatic, Blueprint, How High soundtrack, Word of Mouf, Will Rap for Food. Not all faves of mine but all define the years to come.
