Regarding Clair Obscur - We believe sometimes we have to pick our battles. A few placeholder assets that were immediately patched out does not make an entire game AI slop.
Our account is about recognizing, appreciating and highlighting the strengths of human creativity. If a game is 99.99% a human crafted labor of love, we do not believe 0.01% of GenAI (if it even qualifies as that much) is worth slandering the entire game over.
Doing that gives permission to AI Boosters to do what they do best - take credit for things they had no hand in. They now take a game that was 99.99% a human crafted labor of love and say "Look at the power of GenAI to make these incredible games possible" when it had no meaningful impact at all.
Obviously we would all always prefer it wasn't used, and the internet is not a place that handles nuance well. But please keep this in mind for the future. We do not believe in witch hunts or hate directed at the hard work of artists or developers.🫖
REVIEW: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
My favorite game of the last decade.
I know I'm not alone in saying that Expedition 33 ended up being so much more than expected. I was very intrigued when it was first announced, immediately committed to playing it, then decided I wouldn't, then decided I would again. I initially thought of it as an interesting flyer to fill my time between other 2025 game releases, but as it turns out, Sandfall Interactive's debut title stands above them all.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a love letter to classic JRPGs, bringing a modern touch to many of the concepts and conventions in those games, but also fitting them together in a way that makes it stand out. It features an old school undersized world map for traversal, an airship (FLASHING THROUGH THE SKY), sleek and reactive turn-based combat reminiscent of Final Fantasy X, a skill and upgrade system inspired by Final Fantasy IX, music as grand and evocative as the greatest JRPG soundtracks ever made, and a mascot-worthy race of lovable wooden creatures that dot a beautifully crafted world.
The story and characters also function as a celebration of the game's influences and genre. Each protagonist fits a particular archetype and the narrative tropes are a tried and true pillar of JRPGs. But again, these are all presented to the player in a way that makes them feel unique to Clair Obscur.
There are a couple of characters that don't maintain the same level of relevance throughout the adventure, but they still had enough inherent appeal in their design and performances that I appreciated them nonetheless. There are some very obviously talented people involved, very famous ones as well, and they're all utilized perfectly. It's an exceptionally endearing group of core characters, antagonists included.
As for the story, I don't think there's much I can say without spoiling it, but it is one of the most poignant narrative experiences I've had in a long time. Although I think Expedition 33 is the sum of many great parts, the story sits at the center for me. Each act surprises you and successfully builds on the same powerful themes and emotions all the way to a stunning finish. It was the worst case of gaming depression imaginable when I rolled credits.
Expedition 33 is a game that excels in so many areas at once while also bridging various gaming communities together. It marries the old with the new, tactical with action, and it brings levity as well as sobriety. It's a game that excites fans of a bygone era and modern gamers alike. It certainly won't be for everyone and that's fine. Not every chance it takes will hit and not every system it implements will work for all gamers, but it is a game full of heart and authenticity that has deeply impacted many people. It also stands as a testament of what can be achieved with a smaller budget, singular vision, passionate creatives, and a lot of time on reddit boards.
I believe Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a timeless game, a very special experience, and for those who come after...a new inspiration.
