Hard part about this is some students wouldn’t be able to explain who they are without it. Schools need to shift the lens they review applications through as well. A low undergraduate GPA almost always means something traumatic happened and that student has bounced back.

I think we should be advising students to write statements of purpose for graduate programs without exposing all of their trauma or adverse experiences to unfamiliar people reviewing their applications. Students shouldn’t have to exploit themselves to earn a spot in a program.
