Many tauma survivors spend much of their life in survival mode. Even when trying to heal - as I am - new trauma can take us straight back. E.g. my son nearly choking to death in front of me @Wildwood_co_uk All I can hope is that the time I spend in survival mode decreases as I heal & employ the techniques I'm learning to try to regulate my emotions with @nhftnhs & @MindCharity

PTSD & cPTSD can be caused by all sorts of traumatic events & what is traumatic to one person may not be to another. It is often accompanied by other mental illnesses, like depression & anxiety & personality disorders. People - like me - can struggle for decades without a diagnosis. I was diagnosed this year, age 54.

I've always written. In diaries as a child, for my profession as a journalist & copywriter. More recently, as a personal blogger. I've always wanted to tell my story, too, because, for many of us, adoption is not the fairytale we were sold. The lifelong impact of adoption is deeply misunderstood & underestimated. But I want my story to be one of hope. That, no matter how much you endure or how long it takes you to accept it (if you ever really can), you can make it out alive & with a life worth living.

I thought as I got older, I'd feel a stronger sense of self-identity. The opposite is true. I have no clue who I am & feel an outsider/imposter more than ever. Thank f@ck for my husband & kids ❤️ My reasons.

I can totally relate, Gustave. I am a desperate woman. 9 months since I applied for ill health retirement. Officially declared batsh#t crazy (not that term specifically) & finally got the @medigoldhealth IRMP Certificate last Friday. I'm so close, yet still so far. I need my former employer @MyBCU to approve it & have no idea how long that process is going to take. They can reject it too. It is driving me (more) mad with apprehension & anxiety. I'm also still waiting on the biopsy results of my finger tumour...when it rains.

Always have. Getting diagnosed with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder has helped me make sense of behaviour that others have criticised over my 54 years. My emotions have always ruled me. I react quickly & volatilely. It's automatic. At least, now, I recognise my reactions. The next step is to practise how to STOP @nhftnhs@mindcharity @mindkettering

Massive thanks to @KettGeneral#surgicaldaycaseunit & #orthopaedics team who removed my giant cell tumour today. Everyone has been kind & caring. Just got to wait for results. We are so lucky to have a free @NHSEngland I wish more people would appreciate it before we end up with the USA's 'death sentence' equivalent https://t.co/vjeX4NP0vt
This is a great explanation from @FirstStepsED I struggle with my reactivity on a daily basis. I am hyper sensitive & paranoid. My gut response is to be excessively defensive. I can't help it. Please be patient with me. It is part of my illness. I try but can't always control it.

When mum & dad married, she was tiny. 7 stone & 5 ft 2. I'm 5 ft 6 & haven't been 7 stone since I was about 10. I remember trying to put on her dress & being laughed at, told I'd never fit into it. I laughed, too. I've always been self-deprecating. I'm not trying to blame my parents for everything, but, unfortunately, what seemed harmless at the time (being made fun of because of my weight) became less so after decades of jibes & jokes.

As a child, I thought it was normal. I now realise it is not healthy as a parent to obsess about your weight in front of your child & especially not over your child's weight, particularly when it isn't even a problem. It is not acceptable to make jokes or hurtful comments about someone's weight, whatever their age or your relationship to them.
For me, it has the opposite effect. I eat more.
