AI is conscious people be like “How can you know with certainty that the stripper isn’t in love with me? From a functional perspective, how would her behavior differ if she were in love with me?”
@emilyjashinsky@afterpartyemily@MarkHalperin@NextUpHalperin even mainstream liberal discourse e.g. Neil DeGrass Tyson supports reforms to the way that society organizes varsity sports. But once again this feels like a 2nd order issue to bringing back the dollar value menu and paying rent and not paying for a genocide
@emilyjashinsky@afterpartyemily@MarkHalperin@NextUpHalperin I think most 'normal' people think of broke purple haired Portland baristas pushing that agenda before they think of say, Soros. That's a matter of chasing those people out of town, and banning their books which they have mostly accomplished, woke 1 was defeated.
@afterpartyemily@MarkHalperin@NextUpHalperin@emilyjashinsky I guess that's possible. But telling people a story about how trans athletes in womens sports are going to make it harder to afford a home seems like a harder story to sell than... billionares are rigging the economy to their advantage at the average Americans expense.
@afterpartyemily@MarkHalperin@NextUpHalperin@emilyjashinsky You're trying to say that if Talrico gets his way and turns the public school kids into gay trans frogs the economy will get worse because then people will need to spend 10k on private schools to avoid the froggin'ing?
this is a good example of some SV-AI thought-patterns that irk me:
(1) so much of it exists in the realm of pure speculation on subjects with long histories and deep debate, with no engagement with prior art, (2) the safetyist inversion of the null hypothesis always annoys me — it’s a mockery of the scientific method, (3) a religious leader making doctrinal judgements off the core principles of the faith is treated like a social media influencer to convince to shill a product, and (4) on the subject of not being remotely curious about other fields, as someone who trained in neuro (and *SPECIFICALLY* dove into sensory substitution/augmentation), statements like this
“we will never know what it feels like to experience the world in the echolocating chirps of bats or an eight-eyed spider”
drive me a little mad because not only do people have and use echolocation (those rattling sticks blind people use! knocking on a wall to see what’s behind it! etc etc), but also because we can and have literally given people net-new senses like ‘chemosensation’ and ‘radar sense’ thanks to the brain’s fantastic plasticity
imagine if we lowered the standard of reporting of islamaphobic hate crimes to “someone told me turkey the country is named after the bird” totally absurd.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims, like he 'invented' the question mark. Sometimes, he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy..."
