This is Camp IV on Mt Everest (~7,900 m), the highest campsite on Earth and the final stop before the summit.

What should be one of the most extraordinary places on the planet has, in many ways, become one of the ugliest faces of Everest's commercialisation. Abandoned tents, empty oxygen bottles, food cans, torn gear, and other waste are scattered across the South Col, turning the world's highest campsite into a graveyard of climbing equipment.

The mountain deserves better.

Absolutely, it is so obvious.
It's so not the style of China's MFA to send an aide to barge in on stage in mid-speech, hand a note scribbled on hotel stationery to a foreign diplomat.

And what kind of minister just reads it without authenticating it first ?! He knew what it was, and feigned surprise.

It was just a badly scripted attempt to get some media exposure, a diplomatic clickbait. Big fail.

What is concerning is the number of casual observers who are convinced it's a W for the Philippines' diplomacy. They are literally cheering an own goal. Talk about patriotism.

Philippines is being set up as the next Ukraine

The note in Seoul wasn’t some clumsy diplomatic gaffe. It was theater.

Teodoro didn’t just reject China’s position on the 2016 award. He turned it into a performance for the cameras, held the paper up like a trophy, and delivered the exact lines Washington wanted to hear.
That’s not a defense secretary defending his country’s fishermen. That’s a man auditioning for the role of frontline proxy.

We’ve seen this movie.
Ukraine was told the same thing: stand firm, international law is on your side, the West has your back. Look what that bought them. A ruined country, hundreds of thousands dead, and a war that serves American strategy, not Ukrainian families.

The Philippines is now being loaded up with US access sites, missiles, and talking points about “deterrence.” Every incident at Second Thomas or Scarborough gets blown up in Western media while American ships and planes operate far from their own shores. The point isn’t protecting Filipino sovereignty. The point is to tie China down in its own backyard the same way they tried to tie Russia down in the Black Sea.

China doesn’t want to invade the Philippines. It just refuses to let the first island chain become a noose. If Manila keeps choosing the Ukraine path, ordinary Filipinos will be the ones who pay when things go hot. The people writing the script will still be sitting in Honolulu and Washington.

The note was sloppy. The strategy behind it isn’t.

I was one of the first to write about doggie transhumanism - in 2011: There is another troubling trend in America about which I can only offer anecdotal support that I believe points to the deterioration of our culture. It seems that Americans are becoming more and more obsessed with animals and pets. Across the political and sociological continuum it seems that many folks are creating an equivalency between animals and humans, almost to the point of animal worship. This concerns me and may point to the extreme fragmentation of society such that people are craving unconditional and nonjudgmental bonds, like that which can be received from a pet. It points to loneliness too, where people may be seeking out pets for social contact because they are not talking to their neighbors. A more troubling explanation for the animal obsession may be the devaluation of our own species, such that people believe there is no moral or spiritual difference between humans and other animals. To this writer, this phenomenon speaks to societal devolution.

“If you come to a sporting event, you have to respect the sport. I feel like it’s common courtesy to read up on the sport. Especially the etiquette. It could be a good thing for people to make the sport of tennis popular to their specific audience. But I think it has to be managed a lot better, especially in the situation like in my first round match. Overall there’s huge positives. You want people to continue to grow the sport.
