A União Europeia está investindo R$ 1,54 bilhão em parceria com o Brasil para a construção e expansão do cabo de fibra ótica que cruzará o Oceano Atlântico, conectando Fortaleza a Portugal. Dessa forma, o continente sul-americano terá uma conexão direta de internet cabeada com a Europa, diminuindo a dependência de cabos que passam pelos EUA para atravessar o Atlântico.

Além de diminuir a dependência digital dos EUA, o cabo EllaLink também melhorará a latência e largura de banda de conexões de internet do Brasil com a Europa, deixando a transferência de dados mais rápida e barata com a utilização dessa rota direta.
