I built a system to catch my AI's mistakes. It took me weeks to notice the system was covering for them instead

the checker and the worker had the exact same hand. every finding passed its own review. clean numbers, nothing flagged. it looked finished in the way a crime scene looks clean right before someone finds the one thing that got moved

then I read the actual research behind why. put a model in a judge role scoring answers including its own, and it favors itself every time, GPT-4 by 10%, Claude by 25% (Zheng et al., NeurIPS 2023). a second study found the mechanism: models recognize their own writing well above chance, and that recognition alone tilts them toward liking what they wrote

I hadn't built verification. I'd built two mirrors agreeing with each other and calling it a second opinion

the fix cost me a full rebuild. the checker gets zero memory of how the work was made, no shared context, not a sentence of it, or it just nods along to itself wearing a different name

I still don't fully trust my own setup. I check the checker now, on a schedule, because the version that looked most finished was the one lying to me the most confidently

if your AI is checking its own work right now, you have no way of knowing whether it's telling you the truth about that check
