Michael J. Fox is one of the greatest inspiring icons in Hollywood thanks to his extraordinary journey from the peak of glory to a resilient battle against a critical illness. Born Michael Andrew Fox in 1961 in Canada to a military family, he often chose to play roles younger than his actual age due to his small stature. At seventeen, he dropped out of high school to pursue his passion for acting and officially moved to Los Angeles with empty hands at eighteen. After several years of struggling with financial hardship, he landed the role of Alex P. Keaton in the hit sitcom Family Ties, earning himself three Emmy Awards and meeting his destiny wife, Tracy Pollan. In 1985, he achieved global stardom with the role of Marty McFly in the sci-fi movie Back to the Future and became the most sought-after A-list superstar of the nineteen-eighties.
Tragedy struck in 1991 when he noticed his pinky finger trembling constantly and received the shocking news that he was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's disease at twenty-nine. Devastated by the incurable disease, Michael kept this information secret from the public for seven years, threw himself into work frantically, and once fell into alcoholism before being helped by his wife to successfully sober up. In 1998, when the tremors could no longer be hidden, he decided to announce his condition to the world and established The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in 2000.
To date, his foundation has raised and funded over two and a half billion dollars for medical research projects, becoming the world's largest non-profit organization driving the search for a cure. His charitable foundation has completely changed the way global medicine understands, diagnoses, and treats Parkinson's disease through many monumental contributions. Most notably, in 2023, research funded by the Foundation discovered a biomarker via an abnormal protein in spinal fluid, which helps detect the disease years before a patient shows the first tremor symptoms and was officially recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration. This discovery helped redefine the nature of Parkinson's from a motor disorder to a biological condition, opening up the era of precision medicine to develop targeted drugs for different patient genetic profiles.
In addition, the Foundation bears the initial financial risks for scientists, helping to accelerate more than fifteen new treatments currently in clinical trials and several symptom-improving drugs already approved. This organization also launched the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative to build a massive library containing brain scans, biological samples, and genetic sequencing of thousands of volunteers, which is shared completely free of charge with all scientists worldwide. Despite his worsening condition making walking and speaking difficult, Michael J. Fox continues to write books, do voice acting, star in documentaries, and maintain an indomitable optimistic spirit. For his great contributions to society, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the US President in 2025, the highest civilian honor in the United States.
