Having grown up in Sub-Saharan Africa and spent my soldiering days in South Africa, South West Africa and Southern Angola, I watch the British heatwave hysteria with the calm detachment of someone who’s seen real ovens.

Yes, it’s hot this week.

Yes, we’re not built for it.

But instead of melting into a puddle of complaint, maybe we could treat this rare gift of actual sunshine like the miracle it is?

We didn’t have millions of people competing for the most dramatic “I can’t cope” post.

We just got on with it.

The real killer isn’t the temperature, it’s the competitive woe.

Today we learned more details about the attack on three young children outside a creche in Dublin.
