I remember walking into a restaurant around new GRA , PortHarcourt in 2014. I was badly starving after walking about 4 miles looking for job. At first they thought I wanted to buy food, I scanned the whole restaurant and saw people eating, looked around then gained courage to talk to the owner of the restaurant.

I told him I was starving and I honestly don’t want him to give me free food and I’ll stay till evening washing dishes of the customers so I can get food to eat that day.

He asked me my name, which I told him and showed him my cv. He looked at me and told me he’ll be back. Came back and said it’s fine. I asked him where I can keep my bag which he showed me a place. I dropped my bag, went to the back of the restaurant where plates are washed to start.

He called me back to eat first. He asked what I’d like to eat, I ordered fufu and afang soup and went back to working after eating. After washing the first two plates. He and his wife came to meet me at the back with a big bowl of food and #5000 naira.

He said he doesn’t want me to wash plates for him, that he just wanted to test my sincerity, was an argument between us. They insisted that I should leave. After back and forth, I thank them and left.

I don’t know why I am sharing this story today, but all I want to say is stay strong, keep pushing. Good things will happen to you.

I know people who committed suicide cos they couldn’t bear the shame of the addiction of drugs and gambling had brought to them. The church, family and friends judge them, left them to figure it out by themselves.

They lost hope and ended it.
