Bare Island, Botany Bay, c. 1870 — much as it would have been when visited by Sir Joseph Banks in 1770 and La Pérouse in 1788.

After the First Fleet abandoned Botany Bay, notice boards were placed on the island in July 1788, advising visiting ships that the First Fleet had moved to Port Jackson.

In 1885 the island was turned into a military fort.

The bridge was added in 1887 and is still standing today.

Bare Island featured in the movie Mission: Impossible 2 as the villain’s fortified hideout.
