I'm a mathematician. What got me into using AI super seriously happened before the recent successes of major theorems proved with LLMs. I got excited by the ability to rapidly build new tools for the math community. The first big tool I've helped build is https://t.co/wj6JgpnEbu.
@yiannissak@tonylfeng@dsavitt Here is what got me interested. I was using an LLM to explore a question. In the process many new examples, lemmas, and propositions were explored and discarded en route to the main idea. I wanted to engage with the main line of thought, but I want the side quests recorded too.
@yiannissak@dsavitt One can search based on how much human understanding is asserted upon submission: https://t.co/p9BfeHDNqD. So far, most works claim at least some human understanding. We want to promote this in general.
This is meant to be a repository so that results which are currently being announced on social media, or buried in random github repositories, can get permanent homes and be citable in the future.
Hello, world! There is a new repository for works in math and TCS: https://t.co/Br3fKoLgn6, now in public beta. Please try it out and submit something! We welcome your feedback while we build and improve it.
@sszone104322 I am a big believer in citizen science efforts, like eBird from Cornell Labs or iNaturalist. Anyone interested in working on mathematics can and should. I am interested in helping to establish norms about what "working on mathematics" means.
I was happy to accept an invitation from Terry Tao to write a post for his blog on what the purpose of mathematics is.
My essay *fast math/slow math* is now up there: https://t.co/IGiu5qV4xY
In short, I advocate for both.
@Chuck8026216470 Good question. I also insist my PhD students write their *first* paper without coauthors and have done so for years. In part this is so that when they graduate they believe themselves truly to be mathematicians. Perhaps I would suggest a similar practice here.
@yiannissak@tonylfeng Strongly agree Yiannis. We are complicated. We know a lot of people. We are a lot of people. We have diverse opinions. We should talk to everyone.
