Join us for a walking tour of Cork City's benchmarks as part of @HeritageWeek! Learn about the history of these often overlooked features in the built heritage landscape, and how to locate and map your own finds. Places are limited so booking is essential: https://t.co/HbjUU7VquM
Glad to hear this benchmark will be reinstated and at the correct elevation.
Well done to @SignsTheReading for highlighting that it had been removed as part of the new works; it's likely this part of Cork's built heritage landscape would have been lost forever otherwise.
UPDATE: I spoke with engineers involved at last Monday's meeting of #CorkCC.
The benchmark is safe and will be restored. A stone bench is planned at this location, which would have obscured the benchmark. The benchmark will be reinserted into this bench at the same elevation.
@ubermick Hi Gaz, I don't think that's a benchmark (looks to me like it was cut with an angle grinder rather than with a chisel), but a good way to be certain would be to check that location on an old OS map and see if there's a "BM" and a figure for the height above sea level at that spot
For the Friday View on @TDrisheen this week I talked w/ Tony McGrath @SignsTheReading abt benchmarks. Tony spotted the benchmark which was moved in the construction work on Patrick's Hill, & he has a worthwhile idea abt how we could all learn more about benchmarks
This is an awful shame! Was a rare example of a benchmark on a kerb, as noted by @SignsTheReading. Hopefully the old kerb stones (and benchmark) will be reincorporated into the completed works 🤞 @The_VQ_Cork@GardenCityShane
And there it was - gone
Looks like the old benchmark has lost out to the public realm works on MacCurtain St/Patrick's Hill, #Cork

More art like this in the Rebel City and county!!!🖼️
We have one with a copper bolt too, down by the Killaloe canal at site of lock & lock house. Always thought it was chewing gum stuck in the centre! Thanks for the explanation.
@tidesntales@newrossstreetf1@VisitNewRoss Great find! Looks like a 'rivet' benchmark with the copper bolt still intact. We've found lots of pivot benchmarks during our survey which are similar, but no rivet ones so far I don't think. @ray_hutchings has a great blog with more info: https://t.co/ADX7SlVJOn

Spotted this while out exploring New Ross #Wexford yesterday, it's on the town side of the old bridge. It seems to be a crows foot, or map makers benchmark, but any I've seen tend to be vertical against a wall, whereas this is lying flat on the quayside
Example of a well preserved pivot #benchmark in St Mary's New Ross, #Wexford.
Somewhat unusually the benchmark is on the ground hidden by the door. Very inconspicuous!
I wonder was this done due to an objection to the regular cut benchmark being visible on the outside wall?
We are once again running our Benchmarks Tour for #HeritageWeek2022
It will be similar to last year's tour! 😆
