she leaned into the soft kiss, lips curving into a smile as she shifted to give jamie a kiss of her own, lips pressing to the corner of her mouth.

-nodded, eyes closing as she leaned in to pepper kisses over jamie’s cheeks, smiling softly as she did.

“quiet is good. as far as i’m concerned, quiet is great.”

dani let her thumbs brush against jamie’s cheeks, sweeping away her falling tears, as the two of them shared this moment. she had never expected a day like this, to be alone with her own thoughts, to not have them clouded by the rage and resentment of another.

“-baby,” she choked out, tears dripping onto her cheeks. “it’s like—...it’s just quiet. just my thoughts. just me.”

dani felt her lips curve into a wide smile, grinning against jamie’s lips, as she returned the quick kiss with one of her own. her hands lifted, resting on either side of jamie’s face, and she just let herself be there in the moment. for years, it had never been just the two-

-of them. it was always them, and the monster that lived inside dani, but for once, for now, she had jamie to herself.

hearing the shift in jamie’s voice, the au pair couldn’t stop the tears that formed in her eyes, though that grin still resided upon her lips. “yeah,-“

dani lifted a hand and ran her fingers through her tangled hair, mindlessly reaching for the mug as it was handed to her. “baby, i can’t feel her here today,” she spoke, ignoring what jamie said, but looking up at her with eyes brighter than they had been in a long time.-

-was silent. so quiet that it almost felt like she wasn’t there at all.

her mind was pulled from this realization when she heard jamie speak, toying with her hair. “you’re joking,” she replied, pushing herself up and rubbing her eyes. “i slept through the whole day?”

dani hadn’t meant to sleep all day. she hadn’t even meant to sleep in at all, but exhaustion pulled her under and refused to let her go until she succumbed to it. on the bright side of it all, she felt better than she had in months, and the other presence that lived inside her-

dani shifted, but she didn’t wake, rolling over in her sleep to push herself closer to jamie, very nearly reaching for her tho her eyes were closed.

it wasn’t until she felt the weight on the bed that she began to stir. “what time is it?” she murmured, stifling a yawn.
