@chainbear Iβm interested in how any of what happened tallied with the sporting regs as they are written, with the seeming imperative command in rule 51.11 that all cars βmust return to the gridβ for a race resumption. The rules for the race start however are written to allow pitting.
@W3ghe@The_LazzeEM @GameRiotArmy @MercedesAMGF1 No, you can do it at the first start as per rule 42.1c. But under both restart procedures (from a red flag - 51.11 or from a safety car 43.1) it says must return to the grid.
@RichardTallis@APater6076 @GameRiotArmy @MercedesAMGF1 The same form of words is used in article 51.11. Itβs the reverse of what you say, at the first start the rules make provision for putting, in subsequent restarts, unless you were already there before the suspension, you are supposed to be on the grid.
@PaulBurris23 @MercedesAMGF1 There used to be a thing where if there was a red flag in the first few laps then the race was restarted. This is now gone. It now comes under the standing start restart procedure, rule 43 in the current regs. This doesn't seem to have provision for entering the pit lane.
@kumaressan@MercedesAMGF1 My contention is that that applies during the initial race start only. This was a race resumption which has its own section and uses the form of words βmust return to the gridβ.
@W3ghe @GameRiotArmy @MercedesAMGF1 I think in the regs, at least, it makes provision to enter the pits during the formation lap for the first start, but it doesnβt appear to for race restarts.
@BernardSpiteri @GameRiotArmy @F1 Iβm quoting article 43.1 of the code. Which says βmust return to the gridβ for a standing start restart. There is no βmustβ in the rules for the standard start procedure at the beginning of the race.
@GameRiotArmy @MercedesAMGF1 Yes, I was trying to see why Russell was ordered to give the places back and stumbled across it: βOnce the safety car has entered the pit lane all cars, with the exception of those required to start from the pit lane, must return to the grid, take up their grid positionsβ¦β
@andrewbensonf1 I canβt see how the pitting tallies with article 42.11 of the sporting code. It seems to me that only Hamilton did the right thing by taking the grid start.
