Learning more about cash-based private practice and how it will be a huge part of PT in the future. Good article to read!

Being culturally competent should not be a requirement for being an effective Clinician, it should be a part of all human behavior. But when we look outisde our own cultural bias, we can optimize patient outcomes!

@TMarcoly_SPT @britbryars_PT Interesting! I think on initial visit, raising this concern prior to the pt making a request may even help reinforce greater cultural competence, and demonstrate high levels of customer service. #dpt770#TM
@TMarcoly_SPT @bg I have yet to work with a pt with aphasia, but I can imagine that being comfortable with proximity and touch would be key factors to gaining their trust. IMO, non-English speaking pt's truly love any effort to communicate in their language, even a few words! #dpt770#TM
@britbryars_PT @TMarcoly_SPT As an aide, I learned from a PT to first take the patient's hand and place it on themselves when you wish to cue them instead of you directly touching them. It helps to build a barrier between you and them, and helps gradually gain their trust with your contact. #dpt770#TM
@jepperson_spt @TMarcoly_SPT Body language has been effective with my pt too. But adapting the language towards the pt works is key too. My patient is very macho but often complains about giving up. I've found the cue "be strong" or "stand tall" makes him feel more masculine and confident. #dpt770#TM#JE
@RThomson_SPT I remember pushing a patient of hispanic culture in her wheelchair back to her car, and she grabbed my hand and kissed it! @etidwell15 It was her way of showing appreciation and I believe gestures like these should be accepted, as long as within ethical boundaries. #dpt770#RT
@aandreini_spt IMO, making an effort to learn one's culture illustrates your investment to the patient, and in turn, will likely be reciprocated by the patient's compliance with therapy and exercise at home. #csulbdpt#dpt770#AA
@TMarcoly_SPT @britbryars_PT I observed PT's who were treating women of muslim faith. It was important for the PT to offer privacy and be mindful of revealing bare skin in front of other people. Therefore, I would likely offer the patient a private room and work around clothing as needed #dpt770#TM

@jepperson_spt@britbryars_PT Right, I agree! Otherwise, independent PT buisness owners are really going to be at a disadvantage to make profit unless they have many orthopedic MD's referring patients their way! #csulbdpt#JE
@britbryars_PT@jepperson_spt Do you think spreading the word is enough though? More pt's may realize they can see us before they go to the MD, but do you think the PT community should fight more for complete autonomy so a referral is not required, at all, even after 45days/12visits? #csulbdpt#BB#JE
@Kaz_SPT An ATC who has lost his license within another state poses a serious risk to the public if they are allowed to practice in CA without regulation. Many athletes are minors, so poor managment of these individuals can lead to debilitating injuries later on as adults. #csulbdpt#KK
@mattmnzDPT2020 I feel like POPT's now control rehab therapy, and there is less opportunity for independent PT clinics since physicians are likely to refer to their own therapists. The bill is a step forward for PT, but it really depends on your connections with MDs to make real $ #csulbdpt#MM
