The 2024 election is set to take place against the backdrop of 10/7 and the destruction of Gaza.
What is the cost of our democracy and is it worth it?

@iran0pessimist This is easily the most thoughtful and sincere commentary I’ve read about her passing and her role within the greater political context.
@EoinHiggins_ So it would be better to exclude influential commentators with massive platforms who opinions you disagree with, and therefore make it more difficult to stop the mass murder of men, women, and children?
@samhusseini@decensorednews The “ I was just doing my job” excuse shouldn’t work for Patel. I hope his work for the Biden administration follows him for the rest of his career.
@ggreenwald@curaffairs It’s politically and morally irresponsible to refuse building alliances with right wingers who oppose Israel and their crimes.
If Norm believes Israel is committing the crime of all crimes, what other consideration could he have that makes cooperation with the right too costly?
You can believe that what Israel has done in Gaza and other parts of the Middle East is horrendous, that Israel has far too much influence over our politics, and also that strict border control is important, particularly for working class Americans.
The latter is not a view I hold, by the way, in a broad sense. I don’t think America can simultaneously cause mass misery in many parts of the world through its interventionist policies, including Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, and close its doors to victims of its terrible foreign policy.
But I also believe well-intentioned people can disagree with me here: that they can deplore Israel’s actions and also think it’s important to enforce immigration policy in the interests of working class Americans while advocating for non-interventionist foreign policy.
I am extremely suspicious, though, of war hawks who also advocate harsh immigration policies, because they seem to want to turn much of the world into a hell-hole and then deny people the ability to immigrate to the west.
But Finkelstein doesn’t address the issue with this level of nuance. He reduces our politics to a caricature of left-good/ right-bad, and it’s not convincing at all
