How I Went from Studying Microbiology to Becoming a Senior Data Analyst.
years ago, I was an undergraduate studying microbiology.
I understood cell structures, metabolic pathways, and lab protocols. I could interpret gel electrophoresis results. But I couldn’t write a SQL query. I didn’t know what a dashboard was. And “data storytelling” sounded like something from a journalism class.
Today, I’m a Senior Data Analyst.
This is how it happened.
Phase 1: Realizing I Was Already Analytical
Microbiology trained me to think in systems.
•Form a hypothesis
•Design an experiment
•Collect data
•Analyze results
•Draw defensible conclusions
That’s not far from analytics.
The shift wasn’t from “science to tech.” It was from wet lab experiments to digital datasets.
Once I reframed it that way, the transition felt possible.
Phase 2: Structured Self-Education (No Guesswork)
I didn’t randomly consume tutorials.
I reverse-engineered job descriptions for:
•Data Analyst
•Business Intelligence Analyst
•Analytics Associate
The recurring requirements were clear:
•SQL
•Excel
•Python
•Data visualization (Power BI / Tableau)
•Basic statistics
•Business thinking
So I built a curriculum:
Month 1–2:
•Excel (advanced formulas, pivot tables, Power Query)
•Basic statistics
Month 3–4:
•SQL (joins, subqueries, CTEs, window functions)
•Practiced daily on real datasets
Month 5–6:
•Python for data analysis
•Data cleaning, EDA
Month 7+:
•Dashboard design
•Business case analysis
•End-to-end projects
I didn’t move on until I could build something practical.
Phase 3: Building in Public (The Game Changer)
This was the inflection point.
Instead of “learning privately,” I documented everything publicly.
Every week I posted:
•What I learned
•A dataset I explored
•A dashboard I built
•A business insight I discovered
Not polished. Just consistent.
I shared:
•Before/after cleaning examples
•SQL snippets
•Visualization breakdowns
•Mistakes and lessons
People started noticing.
Recruiters engaged. Professionals gave feedback. Peers asked questions.
My learning became visible proof of competence.
Phase 4: Portfolio Over Certificates
I realized something important:
Certificates say you finished a course. Projects prove you can solve problems.
So I built:
1. A sales analytics dashboard
2.A customer churn analysis
Each project answered:
•What problem is being solved?
•What metric matters?
•What decision would this influence?
That’s when I stopped thinking like a student and started thinking like an analyst.
Phase 5: Thinking Like a Business, Not a Student
The biggest shift wasn’t technical.
It was mental.
I stopped asking:
“How do I use this function?”
And started asking:
“What decision is this data supposed to inform?”
Senior analysts don’t just query data. They drive decisions.
I practiced:
•Translating metrics into business impact
•Explaining insights in plain language
•Presenting findings like recommendations
Data storytelling became my differentiator.
Phase 6: First Role → Rapid Skill Compounding
When I got my first analytics role, I treated it like paid training.
I documented processes. I optimized repetitive reports. I reduced manual tasks.
Within a year:
•I was mentoring juniors
•Owning dashboards
•Leading analytics discussions
That’s when the “Senior” title followed.
Final Reflection
You don’t pivot by waiting to feel ready.
You pivot by:
•Learning deliberately
•Building visibly
•Solving real problems
•Thinking commercially
years ago, I analyzed bacteria.
Today, I analyze businesses.
Same method. Different dataset.
@CompareRatesNg I really love the amazing job the team is doing, keeping us updated with current rates across various platforms.
I would like to have a discussion with the team about getting more platform rates displayed.

DR Congo might be out of AFCON but shoutout to Michel Nkuka Mboladinga… He stood 120 minutes of Football without moving only for Algeria to snatch the win at the 119th minute 🥹😩💔

🕶️ TINTED GLASS OR TINTED SWAG?
Hey there, happy werekend!
So here’s the gist:
If you’re walking or biking under the sun with your tinted shades on—no wahala. Rock that look!
But if you're driving a car with tinted, shaded, coloured, or darkened glass, the rules are different.
Section 3 of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act says:
You’ve got just 14 days from the date of purchase or import to replace those glasses—Yes, including "factory fitted ", unless you’ve got a permit!
Driving tinted? You need a permit.
Walking tinted? You’re good.
Two different vibes. Two different laws.
Want to stay cool and compliant?
Apply for your tinted glass permit online at: https://t.co/BET22hFw3O
Stay safe. Stay stylish. Stay legal.

We launched a new feature that will help students writing JAMB, WAEC, NECO, IGCSE etc easily discover the topics most exam questions come out from. They can compare across different exam years to know the most repeated topics.
This is a magic hack for students. This works across all available subjects.
This will help students know areas to focus on while studying. It will also be very valuable to teachers.
