Some weeks ago, I wrote an appeal titled “𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐆𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭, 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐁𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥." In that message, I urged the young engineers affected by the Dangote Refinery–PENGASSAN dispute to remain patient, vigilant, and legally covered under the protection of the union and the @LabourMinNG Federal Ministry of Labour. I emphasized the need for documentation, fairness, and non-victimisation, since the communique signed between all parties clearly stated that 𝐧𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞.

Unfortunately, what we are seeing today is the very opposite of that spirit of fairness.
Engineers; chemical, electrical, and mechanical, are being redeployed to road construction sites, stripped from their professional environments and reassigned to roles far from their training and job relevance.

Let’s be clear: this is not a transfer of function, rather it is a punitive redeployment. It serves no operational logic, only a political one, to humiliate and frustrate those who dared to speak up, and placing them on 6 months probations after which the same management would assess their performance and determine whether they should be fired or retained!

Such action undermines not only the commitments witnessed and signed by the @LabourMinNG but also the broader principle of industrial justice in Nigeria. When professionals are punished for seeking fair treatment, it sends a chilling message to all workers: that standing up for your rights in Nigeria is still a crime if it challenges powerful interests.

The engineers at Dangote Refinery gave their sweat, their youth, and their intellect to build one of the largest industrial projects on the continent. To repay that dedication with retaliation is a betrayal, not just of them, but of every young Nigerian professional who still believes in merit, dignity, and due process.

The @NigeriaGov @LabourMinNG must not play deaf to this. Silence would mean complicity. This moment demands courage, from the union, from civil society, and from all who believe in decency in the workplace.

We can disagree with unions; we can debate their methods. But we cannot normalize vindictive management practices disguised as “redeployment.” Nigeria’s future depends on protecting the dignity of its workforce, not breaking it.
