In 2008, Japanese researchers conducted an experiment to show how traffic jams can form without any obvious cause.

In the test, 22 cars were instructed to drive in a circle at a constant speed of 30 km/h (18.6 mph).

Despite following these simple instructions, slight variations in driver speed caused a ripple effect-invariably, one car slowed down, prompting others to brake, eventually leading to a "phantom" traffic jam.
