@spyced I suppose then also this thread, where the HashDoS change we added for Cassandra fixed TinyLfu in their traces to match S3-FIFO’s hit rates. Unfortunately their algorithm suffers in many workloads. It’s all a very tricky balance.

@CZ_JanecekPetr @rkennke @richardstartin @ChrisGSeaton Ephemeron are the classic idea here, with the last paper (I know of) advocating for this being "Prioritized Garbage Collection: Explicit GC Support for Software Caches". There are many reasons why I don't use GC as a cache, but I will use weak references when most appropriate.
